Nightmare Conquest – fighting game with unique controls & interesting graphics Install

Nightmare Conquest is a scrolling fighting/platform style game where you lead a dark army through the world of nightmares. You start with one little soldier, but your army will grow along with your moves. Featuring rich, stylised graphics, original controls and loads of levels, if you’ve enjoyed games like Spoing, Treemaker and They Need To Be Fed, this is definitely one you’ll want to check out.

AndroidTapp.com Android Game Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Cool graphics!
  • Immersive and challenging gameplay!
  • Unique control method!
  • Lots of levels and power-ups!

Cons

  • Lacks a little variety.

Features:

Nightmare Conquest is a slick and original game where your army of creatures take on all comers to become the masters of nightmares. The first thing you’ll notice are the graphics. Developers, Nightmare Developers, have used that slick black-on-colour design that seems to be popular, most notably with titles listed above and other like World of Goo. It means your growing army and enemies are inky black silhouettes and move against brightly coloured backgrounds. The contrast makes the gameplay wonderfully vivid and it looks great.

Another great feature is the method of control. While most platform games feature a kind of thumb controller or even tilt controls, instead you need to enter the right command combination into four different buttons. For example to start with, making your army walk requires you to press blue four times. Running requires you to press blue twice, then red twice. Attack occurs when you press blue once, red twice and then blue once again… there are four colours- red, blue, yellow and green so actions are added as you progress and utilise the additional colours. This certainly makes the game stand out as different and, while I’m not sure the controls could be as effective in other games, I felt they worked really well here.

As you defeat the baddies you are awarded bonus points. These points can be used to increase different powers; attack power, life, etc. These boost the abilities of your nightmare creatures and make them more effective in battle. This creates an extra element of strategy to the game- should you boost attack power or maybe defence? Each of your nightmare creatures can be upgraded over time, and each become better fighters in the process.

The free version of the game features six levels which genuinely gives you a good feel for it. The full version, coming in at well under $1, provides a total of 30 levels to work through. Levels can be quite tough and you might need to build up your powers to take on the tougher ones. Much of gameplay is down to remembering which combinations perform which actions- at times it reminded me a little of Simon Says in that you have to recall which sequences will work in any given situation. This adds an extra dimension to gameplay and definitely makes it more challenging.

Fun Factor:

With the combination of nice graphics, innovative controls, challenging gameplay and plenty of levels; Nightmare Conquest is lots of fun. Gameplay also reminded me a little of Cartoon Wars and Shooting Warrior- that relentless onslaught of baddies. Again, titles which require elements of strategy.

Addictive:

Yes, definitely! Nightmare Conquests has that ‘one more go’ or ‘one more level’ factor about it that keeps you coming back again and again. While it’s not Tetris-level addictiveness, you’ll get some good mileage out of it- certainly the full version.

Graphics:

The graphics are themed, so while they’re not eye-wateringly beautiful, they look good. Essentially in 2D the black on colour contrast is superb and works pretty well with the ‘nightmare’ concept.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

The music is that cute haunted house style track. Not threatening, but… oh you’ll know what I mean when you hear it! There are additional sound effects; wind, fighting, crashes, etc. as you progress though a level. While not amazing, they suit the game.

Should you Download Nightmare Conquest? If you like scrolling action games or, in fact, any of the other games I’ve mentioned in this review, definitely be sure to check out Nightmare Conquest. It’s fun, engaging and original in many ways. Be sure to try the free version first to see what you think.
