Night of the Living Dead Defense is a graphically rich tower defense game based on the classic horror movie. Defend various locations against the onslaught of zombie-type ex-people with a progressively powerful arsenal of weapons. The visuals are great and the sound is possibly the best of its kind in the Android Market. If you’re looking for a new tower defense addiction, this is it.

Features:
Night of the Living Dead Defense is a rather superb tower defense game based on the cult movie by George Romero. The movie influence can be observed throughout, most notably with the sound which is lifted almost wholly from the film itself. This works incredibly well and the game is full of chilling quotes: “They’re coming to get you Barbara” and “Look, here comes one of them now!” The music too is gorgeously atmospheric and haunting. Films like Night of the Living Dead came before the kind of jaw-dropping special effects we get today, so a lot of attention was given to the sound and music so it’s wonderful to see it so richly represented here.
Gameplay is typical tower defense fare, although the routes the undead take differ with each wave, so covering all parts of the gameplay area is important. You face both flying and grounded enemies and have an assortment of soldiers (the towers) to take these out as they pass. There are 12 different types in all, each having different abilities and levels of power, speed, etc.
You can choose between 4 difficulty levels: Casual, Normal, Hard and Insane. Because I have to review games such as this, I often opt for an easier level in order to progress through the game and get a fuller feel of it. However, even on easy I found the game incredibly tricky at about level 5. That might be my only real criticism, the steep learning curve, but to be honest, some might see this as more of a challenge and prefer this to easier games. The developers also created the very popular GRave Defense HD, so they know their stuff!
It’s worth noting that the 1968 original movie can be watched on YouTube for free here.

Fun Factor:
If you’re enjoying the wealth of zombie titles in the Android Market this will be right up your street. It is genuinely a fantastic game and definitely one of the best tower defense-style games available. The atmosphere is just incredible.
Addictive:
With the fun gameplay, impressive sound, great visuals and various levels/unlockables and achievements, Night of the Living Dead Defense can become highly addictive. I did find the steep learning curve is a little tricky, but the way you become immersed in the game makes up for this.
Graphics:
The graphics are gorgeously rendered and colorful. There is a fair amount of blood and gore in the game, so definitely not suitable for children, but it’s brilliantly displayed in cool detail. The gameplay locations are all unique and look superb. Even the menu screens are very well designed and rich with immersive details.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
You receive a shrill vibration if a zombie gets to their target (you get 20 lives so this isn’t the end of the world…) and this feels quite disturbing in its own way. The sound is quite possibly the finest example of music and sound effects in any game or application. It’s rich, atmospheric, varied and adds to the overwhelmingly immersive experience. Just brilliant.
