MyEffects – create your own photo filters with this app!
Dec 12, 2012 11:30 AM –
MyEffects – Photo Editor is a novel and innovative photo editing application for Android. “Another photo editing app?” I hear you ask. Well yes, but this one’s a bit different. The app lets you create your own random effects and save your favourites. It comes with no filters as such, but effects which you can add and customise yourself. Fed up with having to select pre-set filters? This might just be the remedy you’re looking for.
Tested on: Nexus 4
Pros & Cons:
- Simple to use!
- Nice UI!
- Lets you save your favourite filters!
- No ad-free version.
- No additional editing features.
MyEffects is a photo editing tool you control. Instead of having a pre-set number of filters to try out, simply tap the screen to generate random effects. These are created by randomizing the palette available: red, green, blue, brightness and hue- you can even tweak these individually if the picture you’ve created needs a minor adjustment. If then you create a unique and wholly ‘you’ filter, just save it for later use. The app couldn’t be easier to use and instead of being stuck in a regimented system where you only have a number of pre-defined effects to choose from, now it’s all under your control.
A couple of small negatives; firstly the app is ad-supported and there’s no ad-free version. The banner ads do take up a little screen real estate which they can be a little annoying. Secondly, there is little in the way of additional editing features such as frames, cropping, sharpness, the ability to adjust image quality, etc. If the app was filled out a little more with a few more such features, I think it would take even more advantage of its novel and user friendly functionality.
I really like the way you can save your favourite combinations- essentially creating your very own gallery of effects that you have created. Also, as just tapping the screen changes the filter, it is incredibly simple to use and very intuitive. Finally, when you’re happy with your creation, you can share to your various social networks simply and easily. Or, if you want to, you can add it as your homescreen wallpaper.

If you use photo editing apps and require a little more control- albeit control that is very simple to administer- this is a convenient and a user-friendly application that’s well worth trying out. It’s not as comprehensive as many other similar applications in the Google Play Store and does lack a few tools (such as cropping, frames, red-eye removal, etc.) but these aside, it’s still a nifty app to have.
Ease of Use:
The functionality is quite simple, but very effective. As such, it couldn’t be a simpler app to use. Just tap the Generate Effect tab and you are presented with an entirely randomised effect to use or tweak yourself.
I personally tend to keep a few select photo editing apps in a homescreen folder and try them out as and when I’m trying to find a certain look. While this might not wholly replace an app you might regularly use, if you want a simple and fast solution to try out, this is an ideal app to have on your device.
The interface looks very good. It’s sharp, easy to navigate and responsive. One complaint I would have is the banner ads- if there was a paid for version it would be a far better experience.
