Muffin Knight is a highly addictive, witty, beautiful and challenging platform game available on Android. Collect muffins as you race around gorgeous ‘almost‘ 3D scenery, shoot a variety of baddies from pigs, goats, sheep, bats and turtles as well as bosses and flying baddies! A brilliant title, Muffin Knight is perhaps one of the very best games available on the platform.
Price: Free, $1.99
Tested on: HTC Desire HD
Pros
In Muffin Knight the aim of the game is to leap around various levels collecting muffins. With each one, your knight changes to any number of characters; from candy spewing zombies, pooping unicorns and crazy wizards to the awesomely named Ninja Kitty! You change character instantly after each muffin, and each character has different abilities. So, Sir Poopalot the unicorn creates rainbow-colored-yet-explosive dung, PumpKing rolls his head across the platforms in front of him and Cyclops creates black holes that suck the baddies in… and so on. Characters can also be upgraded so their attacks are more powerful. You earn points as you progress and you can upgrade your character’s weapons to wipe out the baddies even more effectively!
The pace of the game is utterly frantic, more so if you fail to kill-off one of the baddies as they come back faster, stronger and on fire! The skill of the game is to obviously collect muffins, and as you do you boost your score and unlock further characters and levels. Scores and achievements are processed via OpenFeint, so you can compete with friends on this platform AND, if that’s not competitive enough for you, there’s even an online multi-player option too! Maybe it was the times I was looking, but I couldn’t find anyone to play with but, more titles should provide this kind of gameplay, it adds a whole new dimension to Android gaming.
The developer of Muffin Knight is Angry Mob Games, whose previous effort was Guerrilla Bob so you can expect buttery smooth graphics, bright colors and vivid environments. Muffin Knight is what I would term ‘almost‘ 3D. While gameplay style is pretty much 2D side-to-side, up/down, the graphics betray distinct depth to the platforms as your character moves. The effect is spot on and looks brilliant.
Controls are on screen (although the game is Xperia Play optimized and also supports off screen control), you get left, right, jump and fire. I’ve never been much of a fan of these kind of controls but they really work well in Muffin Knight and are very responsive. The controls become intuitive very quickly and allow you to get on with playing the game.
All these features create an insanely engaging and thoroughly enjoyable gaming experience. Simply put, there are plenty of far more expensive games available which offer nowhere near as much intuitive, immersive and hilarious fun as Muffin Knight delivers throughout. Check out the video below to get even a tiny flavour of the brilliantly rainbow-tastic content:
Any game that features the repeated whispering of “Ninja Kitty!” is fun in my book, but the wide variety of characters and simple-to-pick-up gameplay mean there’s always something new to find. Gameplay is at a genuinely frenetic pace and very challenging. The learning curve is quite steep, but you have all the lives you want to keep coming back at the same stage so you never feel disheartened when you die. Add to the multi-player option, loads of environments, characters, weapons and baddies and you have a game that oozes fun by the gallon.
Oh God yes! Like in the same way oxygen is addictive. Because you have infinite lives, you are placed right back in the action almost immediately, its incredibly hard to put the game down. Because you can pick the game up and make some progress even in a few minutes you easily see it as a casual game. If you have the will power you could play for 5 minutes… and I stress if you have the will power. Gameplay is easy but compulsive drawing you back time and time again for one-more-go. The environments are lush and easy on the eye, immersing you further into the game. It’s a joy to play and you’ll frequently find yourself going back to it.
The graphics in Muffin Knight are stunning. Gorgeously lush environments, smooth characters as well as unique and well rendered weapons. If you’ve played Guerrilla Bob you might have an idea of the visual quality you can expect in the game, its pretty much as good as you can get outside a very top-end Tegra device. The animation, gameplay, levels, menus and sub-menus all drip in bright color and quality, I really don’t think it gets much better than this.
The sound in the game is also relatively flawless. The game is cutely narrated by a fairy godmother character who introduces each character as you collect muffins. Be prepared to hear “Ninja Kitty!” and “Archer!” in your sleep. The music is the kind of ditty you can’t help but whistle along to and there are various in-game sounds which all work really well with the game. The sound becomes just another perfect element that compliments all the other factors in the game really well.

Should you Download Muffin Knight? Muffin Knight is arguably the best platform game on Android and, in my opinion, an essential download. Fantastically, you can sample the game via a free version to see if it will run on your device and to try out the awesome gameplay, graphics and sound. Muffin Knight is almost painfully addictive and almost un-put-downable. I can attest this on account that this review has taken me far longer to complete on the basis it keeps distracting me! I go on to check a feature and suddenly an hour disappears! Definitely, definitely, definitely download it as soon as you can, even at $1.99 it’s a complete bargain.
