Snaptic and HopeLab are collaborating “Move Your App” developer challenge running April 22 – May 21, 2010. The conference is hosted by Snaptic, a developer of smartphone and web apps that capture, organize and share info, and HopeLab, a non-profit focused on helping address the obesity epidemic and sedentary behavior in young people using mobile tech and apps to inspire more movement. They’re asking Android developers to create apps that get people to move, are fun to use, are innovative in their approach to encouraging physical activity, and use the platform’s open APIs.
TED is offering the 1st place winner of the app challenge an invite to TED Global 2010 in Oxford with Snaptic paying for accommodations and travel.
WHY A DEV CHALLENGE / CONFERENCE FOCUSED ON PHYSICAL ACTIVITY APPS?
- According to The World Health Organization over 1/3 of Americans are currently overweight or obese
- WHO projects that by 2018, 103 million people in the US will be overweight or obese
- Healthcare costs of obesity related medical expenses is estimated at $344B, or 21% of U.S. annual healthcare spending
- The growth of onboard smartphone sensors, large online social networks, and mass adoption of mobile software offer many opportunities for new kinds of apps that encourage active lifestyles
