It's now 142 days since the shutdown! I gave up waiting and bought Theft Aware which is working just fine. Yes, it is a paid app but I don't mind paying for something that's actually available and works as advertised. Mobile Defense is history.

They're certainly not out of business. I am right this moment logged on to their website, and have just successfully located my Nexus One's exact position via their tracking service. It still works great. Actually a lot faster than WaveSecure, but less feature rich.

It is a little disheartening to see that even for those of us who made it into the beta when it was free and public, that there hasn't been any updates to the service or the apk in four months. That's not necessarily a good sign, but it's a bit premature to say that they're "out of business."

It is interesting to note that the other major software for this type of service that's widely WaveSecure, was purchased by McAfee, which was in turn purchased by Intel in the last couple of months. This gives WaveSecure some well-known names and big money backing credibility over the little startup MobileDefense.

My Samsung Galaxy S has some built in feature (mobile tracker) that must be similar, but I've never tried it. I don't even know if it's a free service or not.

Today is October 1st. This app's website says still withdrawn since JUNE! I sense that it's gone, out of business. Too bad as it looked promising.

I like the premise and the fact that it's free, but I see that the Droid 2.2 release has been "delayed" for weeks now. Seems that the developers can't quite get their act ready and maybe that means big trouble ahead. I think I'll explore another company's offering.

I like Mobile Defense, and the fact that it hides itself (sort of) after installation is a plus. An even bigger plus is that it adds no battery drain to the phone, according to Mobile Defense.

WaveSecure is much more feature rich, pin locks the phone with its own lockscreen, wipes remotely, and does other things MobileDefense doesn't. The problem with WaveSecure is that it doesn't hide itself (they claim to be looking for a way to do it), and the authors admit it adds a 2% battery drain to the phone.

I'm actually running both, but I'm so dissatisfied with the battery life on my Nexus One that I am considering uninstalling WaveSecure to see if that "2% battery drain" is really an issue or not.

Mobile Defense is currently free, and they say they'll always have a free version, but this is a beta test of sorts and they acknowledge that the service will have premium charges at some future date.
