Mobile Defense™ is a security service that allows you to remotely protect & manage your phone via a secure website using Google Maps. It’s like LoJack® for your phone. It was created to protect your mobile investment, safeguard your privacy, and give you peace of mind. ** Root Users ** Install as system app to auto-enable GPS and prevent uninstall. For support and release notes visit: http://support.mobiledefense.com

AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Like LoJack for your Android smartphone. Find your phone if lost or stolen from Mobile Defense’s website
  • Remotely lock your phone
  • Send alerts to your phone with alarm sound and security pin
  • Once successfully installed, the app is not detected on the phone (you have to go through “Manage Applications” settings to know it’s there)

Cons

  • No remote wipe. Great appeal to Enterprises and Blackberry users
  • Remote locking the phone is not effective unless you enabled Pattern Lock prior, else the pattern lock screen shows but you can easily get around it by waking up the phone in the normal fashion

Features:

Mobile Defense Android App is like LoJack for your Android smartphone, it helps you find your phone if lost or stolen using Mobile Defense’s website. You can track details about the phone like roaming or battery status, determine whether it is in a car with route and speed bearing information, remotely lock your phone forcing the pattern lock screen, send alerts to your phone with continuous alarm sound and security pin to deactivate the audible alarm.

Mobile Defense was also voted “Best Security App” in our first community collaborated  Android Network Awards!

Usefulness:

Apps like Mobile Defense and Where’s My Droid are extremely useful for finding a lost Android phone. Adds security comfort to find a stolen phone.

How does Mobile Defense Work?

  • Once you install the app, you will need to signup for an account which can be done via the app.
  • After installation you will not see Mobile Defense in the applications list nor will it be detected as background processes using task management apps for Android. That can be good for smartphone owners yet not good for unsuspecting parties if used mischievously to spy on ones activities. The app will only appear in the “Manage Applications” settings menu.
  • A SMS text message is then sent to the phone to activate services like GPS.
  • Thereafter you interact with your phone via Mobile Defense’s website.

Frequently Used:

Not intended for frequent use, however as a safety net when needed.

I like Mobile Defense, and the fact that it hides itself (sort of) after installation is a plus. An even bigger plus is that it adds no battery drain to the phone, according to Mobile Defense.

WaveSecure is much more feature rich, pin locks the phone with its own lockscreen, wipes remotely, and does other things MobileDefense doesn’t. The problem with WaveSecure is that it doesn’t hide itself (they claim to be looking for a way to do it), and the authors admit it adds a 2% battery drain to the phone.

I’m actually running both, but I’m so dissatisfied with the battery life on my Nexus One that I am considering uninstalling WaveSecure to see if that “2% battery drain” is really an issue or not.

Mobile Defense is currently free, and they say they’ll always have a free version, but this is a beta test of sorts and they acknowledge that the service will have premium charges at some future date.

I like the premise and the fact that it’s free, but I see that the Droid 2.2 release has been “delayed” for weeks now. Seems that the developers can’t quite get their act ready and maybe that means big trouble ahead. I think I’ll explore another company’s offering.

Today is October 1st. This app’s website says still withdrawn since JUNE! I sense that it’s gone, out of business. Too bad as it looked promising.

  4. DistortedLoop says:

They’re certainly not out of business. I am right this moment logged on to their website, and have just successfully located my Nexus One’s exact position via their tracking service. It still works great. Actually a lot faster than WaveSecure, but less feature rich.

It is a little disheartening to see that even for those of us who made it into the beta when it was free and public, that there hasn’t been any updates to the service or the apk in four months. That’s not necessarily a good sign, but it’s a bit premature to say that they’re “out of business.”

It is interesting to note that the other major software for this type of service that’s widely WaveSecure, was purchased by McAfee, which was in turn purchased by Intel in the last couple of months. This gives WaveSecure some well-known names and big money backing credibility over the little startup MobileDefense.

My Samsung Galaxy S has some built in feature (mobile tracker) that must be similar, but I’ve never tried it. I don’t even know if it’s a free service or not.

It’s now 142 days since the shutdown! I gave up waiting and bought Theft Aware which is working just fine. Yes, it is a paid app but I don’t mind paying for something that’s actually available and works as advertised. Mobile Defense is history.

  5. Genisis says:

    +1^
Looked at their web page and was ready to install and possibly pay, but, 140+ days since ANY page or app updates?? WTF?? Forget it…Ill get something else. Guess it will be wave secure?
