The Participatory Culture Foundation (PCF) launched Miro 4, the newest version of its open-source desktop media player that will allow users to manage music, including iTunes libraries, videos, playlists and apps, in one place and to sync these digital libraries with Android devices. Miro 4 is free and now available to download for PC, Mac and Linux systems.
“Android phones are surpassing iPhone’s market share, but most people still use iTunes on their desktop. The desktop player has been a missing component for managing media on Android devices,” said Dave Glassco, President of PCF. “This points to the problem Miro 4 is addressing – the open ecosystem needs a great desktop music and video experience.”
Features of Miro 4 include:
- Quickly and easily syncs with existing media libraries, like iTunes, upon installation and recognizes updates in these libraries.
- Comes with a video converter to ensure users have the ability to download and play almost any video or music format.
- Streams and downloads files to and from other Miro-equipped desktops on the same WiFi network, allowing users to manage libraries on multiple machines.
- Allows users to purchase music, video and apps from virtually any online video and music store.
- Streams and/or downloads from any website that offers audio, video or torrents.
“Miro 4 is another great product from the PCF,” said John Lilly, PCF board member and former CEO of Mozilla. “It builds on top of the foundation they’ve built over the years but now is incredibly useful for organizing and syncing music with your Android devices. This was the missing link before Miro 4 and comes with all the open source, open community awesome you can’t get from the big guys.”
