Migration+ helps transfer contacts to your new phone Install

Migration+ is essentially a tool that removes a headache some users encounter when they get a new phone. One big thing for people is getting all their contacts from one phone to another. For some people, like myself, my contacts are pretty much all on Google, so when I get a new phone, my account syncs and they are all there. However, perhaps if a user is switching from and iPhone to Android (or heaven forbid, the other way), Migration+ can make the process seamless and easy.

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Easy to use!
  • Neat user interface!
  • Also lets you remove contacts completely- ideal if you’re returning or selling a phone!
  • Great level of in-app instruction and help!

Cons

  • I’m doubtful people will like the payment options: you have to buy credits to use the free-to-download app.
  • Make sure you actually need an app like this. HTC phones let you import and export contacts, as do other manufacturers. Also, if your contacts are in Google, this might not be needed for importing and exporting as this is done via sync.

Features:

Migration+ aims to take the chore of moving your contacts from one device to another. It can first export all your contacts securely into the cloud. Then, when you’re set up on your new phone, you can log in and import directly to your new device. It’s simple, effective and in my testing works well.

I like the fact you can pick and choose the contacts to save/export/import. Once loaded, you can untick all the contacts you want to leave behind. When importing, you can also only include those which you want on your new devices. It’s not just a wholesale upload, it’s customisable- and certainly good for clearing out duplicates and old contacts.

It should perhaps be noted that, if your contacts are already part and parcel of your Google account, this feature perhaps rightly seems surplus to requirements. When I get a new device, my contacts just sync with all other aspects of my Google account. Additionally, HTC have a service which offers to do this also (although I haven’t needed to use it). My point here would be to ensure that you actually need an app like Migration+ before you get the app, buy credits and use it.

There is another feature of the app that are worth noting. You can delete your contacts from your device (for free) so, if you were selling your phone or giving it to someone, and a factory reset isn’t appropriate for whatever reason, this would solve that problem.

The app is free but requires you to purchase credits for it to work. You essentially need two credits for a basic migration; export then import. These two credits cost $0.99, so one use of the app will cost this. If you need to perform other migrations, you will have to purchase more credits. I think it’s a curious sales model- I can’t really understand why it could not just be a one-off purchase. However, the app is effective and definitely works well- certainly a solution worth considering if you are moving between platforms.

Usefulness:

I think, unless you’re migrating from one OS to another, its an app that might not be required by the majority of users. However, if you need to transfer your contacts between different platforms (or a feature phone to smartphone), this is a safe and stable solution which makes the process far easier.

Ease of Use:

I have a lot of contacts on my device and it took quite a while (20 minutes+) to both export and import, but this aside, the process is very simple to carry out. Select to export, then choose which contacts to save. For importing you just need to select where the contacts are to be saved to and the app does the rest.

Frequently Used:

I don’t think it’s an application you’d use on a regular basis, especially considering you have to pay for each process. However, it could be seen as an essential tool when migrating contacts from one platform to another. It supports Android, Blackberry and iOS currently.

Interface:

The interface is rather simple. Nicely designed and slick-looking. Because the app makes the process of exporting and importing contacts a simple affair, the UI is relatively basic- not much to see really!

Should you Download Migration+ (transfer contacts)? If you perhaps have found switching between devices tricky (especially if it’s from one platform to another), or you use a few different devices and would like your contacts uniformly synced across all of them, solutions like Migration+ are a great idea. Migration+ is secure, responsive and could potentially have corporate applications for rolling out standardized contacts across business phones. If you need the app (and be sure to check your device or Google account doesn’t already do this for free), it works very well and certainly makes the process pain-free.

Paul – fair criticisms. A few points of clarification on cost model. We are $1.00 cheaper than the alternative app right now and ~$19,01 cheaper than taking your phone to a store to do it (cheaper/more expensive depending on where you take it). Our goal is to be the easiest way to move your contacts and other information between phones when you get a new one! We’re working on a Windows Phone build now and will be working no adding the ability to move more (pictures/music/video/docs/etc.) on all versions after that. In addition to having an AWESOME (scaleable/redundant/fast) back end infrastructure which costs us $ every migration, we want to enable the ability to scale our app and cost model so people can migrate EVERYTHING from one phone to another. We think in-app purchase is the best way to do that.
