AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Incredibly feature-rich and customizable.
  • Optional cloud syncing.
  • Multiple lists for different stores.
  • Multiple ways to add items to the list, including barcode scanning.

Cons

  • A bit overwhelming at first, since you just dive right in.
  • Cloud syncing is a bit buggy and some users have reported it not working for them (in my tests it worked fine).

Features:

If you like lists, then this is the app for you. Mighty Grocery is a place to have one master list for everything you might need, at any store you might go to. It has an incredibly rich customization ability – you can not only create lists by store or type, but you can go in and customize the aisles, meaning you can have, aisle by aisle, what you need at each of your local stores, making for a very quick shopping experience once you get there.

One thing I like is that while groceries are obviously a big part of the app from the name, categories for almost every other major type of product from clothing to appliances is also in the defaults lists to choose from, making it very quick to just go through and check off what you need. You can also scan barcodes to add items, or manually type them in. I really like that you can have a groceries list, a Target list and a Costco list, for example, all listing the things you need at each store, by aisle. If you like to get organized before you leave the house so you can run all your errands quickly and efficiently, I don’t know that you could find a better app on Android for that purpose.

Another nice feature is that if you have multiple devices running Android, you can install it on all of them and sync between them. This is great if, for example, you and a spouse both note items needed during the week, and then sync it all to whomever device is going shopping. And again, since it’s not just groceries, you can keep a running tally of what everyone in the family needs, from milk to shaving cream to laundry detergent, and never have to worry about forgetting anything because the person who notices it can make a note of it right away and have it synced to all the other lists. I’ve seen some complaints online that this sync feature didn’t always work for some devices, however, so keep that in mind. In my tests, between my devices, I didn’t have any trouble at all. Personally, I found I liked being able to scan an item with my phone, or note it on there if there was no barcode, then sync it to my tablet and take that shopping with me to use the larger screen, but given how flexible it can be, you can really find a solution that works best for your family.

Usefulness:

Given the immense amount of customization available, you can really tailor this to show exactly what you need, meaning every person can use it a bit differently, and still get a huge amount of use out of it. The sync feature adds to this customizability, giving you a huge range of options.

Ease of Use:

It is very easy to use once you dive in, since you have a wide range of options for adding items to a variety of lists. Once you have it set up, going through and adding your favorites will be quick work. The problem is that there are just so many features and settings to play with, it will take you a while to get really comfortable using the app, and finding the best way to work it into your life. I’d love to see a guided tutorial the first time you open the app, perhaps, and then accessible later in the options, or even an option to hide or show advanced settings, so you could choose to ease into it or jump in with both feet.

Frequently Used:

This is going to be your go-to app for the weekly errands. You’ll find yourself adding items as you think of them all week, which means when the weekend comes around, you’re going to spend less time running errands and more time relaxing.

Interface:

The interface itself is very clean. My one and only complaint again, and it isn’t even so much a complaint, is that there is just so much packed into this app, that you really need to spend a decent amount of time playing with it before you put it to work. My guess is that it will take most people around 30 or so minutes to go through the app and get the basic customizations down, and if you want to go through aisle by aisle, it will take a bit longer. (I wish there was a database of stores you could just go download and tweak a little if necessary to speed things up – if there is and I’ve just missed it, shoot me an email!) And I’d say give it at least a week of use before you really figure out where everything is and how to use it to it’s best advantage in your situation. However, the more time you spend up front learning where everything is and how it works, the easier to use and more useful overall it will be in the long term.
