Features:
MadGab by Mattel is the classic card game ported over to the Android Operating system. The game shows you nonsense sentences like “Noose Pay Perry Port,” and you have to figure out the meaning of the phrase by sounding it out (Newspaper Report). Each phrase is from a different category (Person, Place, Thing, Saying) and they vary in difficulty.
MadGab for Android offers two modes of play: “Timed Round” or “One by One.” The “One By One” mode of play gives the player each question one at a time, and allows the player to choose the difficulty of each question as they progress. This mode is useful if you do not have much time to play the game and would like to do a few brain teasers while waiting at the dentists office. It is also great to burn time with your friends at work by going back and forth with questions for each person.
The “Timed Round” mode allows the player to take on the clock in a MadGab showdown with his previous high score. The player receives two minutes to solve as many MadGab word puzzles as possible. All easy questions answered correctly are worth 5 points and all hard questions answered correctly are worth 10 points. This mode is more challenging then the other and is a great way to challenge yourself to become a MadGab puzzle solving genius! However, it does lack the ability to save your high score to compete with later.
The game has the option to play with sound on or off. The soundtrack is for the main screen is nice and peaceful and reminds me of the Nintendo Wii. While in either of the two game modes the music changes to a high pressure music which reminds me more of “The Million Dollar Money Drop.”

Fun Factor:
MadGab is a fun game to play by yourself and try to challenge the timer. Personally though I think this game is much more fun when playing with other people. The problem with MadGab for solo play is that the entire game hinges on you sounding out the weird phrases and picking up on the actual meaning. This doesn’t work out while playing solo, because you are both the reader and the listener. Instead of your mind being an empty void, hearing the funky phrases, and being able to understand their meaning; you are only able to think of the strange phrase you just read.
This game is much more fun when played with other people, because it allows you to pass the phone around to other people and take turns at both listening and reading. This allows you to enjoy more aspects of the game and makes it much more interactive. Unfortunately the game does not have a team play mode. So the only way to keep track of points, when playing with others, is to write them down on a piece of paper.
Addictive:
MadGab is mildly addictive while playing solo if you like word puzzles. A big detractor from it’s addictiveness is it’s lack of a high score recording system. If I were able to record my scores while in the “Timed Play” mode, then I would be more inclined to return to the application by myself and try to beat that score. Without any way to keep track of my scores there is no one to challenge and the game loses a lot of it’s replay value.
The game is much more fun while playing with friends. However, due to the lack of an in-application scoring system the game loses a lot of it’s replay value. With a scoring system on the phone it could easily be passed around at a party and played with your friends. Instead you have to go through the inconvenience of getting a pad and pencil. In my opinion this causes the MadGab Android application to be more of a 5 minute time waster then a real party game.
Graphics:
The graphics for MadGab are colorful and very reminiscent of the original card game. The game’s interface adapted well to each of the devices that I tested it on, and I did not encounter any resolution errors whatsoever. For this type of game the graphics are perfect. They make you feel like you are playing the original card game.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
MadGab makes no use of the accelerometer or vibration. It would not be feasible for the game to include any accelerometer controls since it is only a quiz game. However, the use of vibration would be a good addition to this game to give you time alerts or notify you that you have answered incorrectly.
The music in MadGab is pleasant when you are at the main screen. The soundtrack sounds just like something out of the navigation screen of the Nintendo Wii, but the in-game soundtrack is no where near as good. It is meant to make you feel pressured while playing the game, like a timer is ticking down. Instead after 5 minutes of playing it makes you feel like your ear drums are being assaulted by a harsh unchanging series of tones. No matter how long you play the music never changes and there are also no sound effects for right answers, wrong answers, or the time running out. Instead those two soundtracks are the only sound in the game.
