Features:
Loops! is a cute little sequencer application that lets you create cool beats on your mobile device. It includes a nice number of sounds to play with and a mixer. It’s simple, perhaps lacking some frills compared to other apps, but works nicely and is fun to use.
Firstly you create a loop platform and call it whatever you like. As default it includes a Drums channel but you can add three more from the choice of Drums 2, Bass Guitar, Bass Guitar 2, Bass Guitar 3, Piano, Sound Effects, Sound Effects 2, Flute, Xylophone, Banjo, Harmonica, Trumpet, Ocarina, Harpsichord, Choir, Choir 2 and Strings. With over 16 bars you add notes for each, just select a channel by tapping on it. Obviously elements like drums are slightly different but higher ‘notes’ are essentially high-hats and lower notes are bass drums. Then, press menu and select Start to hear your creation. I tend to press play and add things as I go along to see how it sounds, but it’s up to you.
There is also a mixer so you can easily adjust the levels of each sound. Once your loop is how you want it, you can even play it alongside other loops you’ve created, so you can create much deeper and more complex soundscapes. These can be played wholly or in separate bars. Extra settings include increasing or decreasing the beats per minute, altering loop length and song length. Plus you can reorder the loops as you see fit. When happy, and you’ve created you hit sample, save it to your SD card for prosperity.
I felt the app looked incredibly simple to begin with, but there’s a lot more too it if you explore it enough. We’ve reviewed apps similar to this before, most notably perhaps RD3 Groovebox. While RD3 Groovebox is a far more developed and polished application, it is an app you pay for, whereas Loops! is a superb little freebie.

Usefulness:
If you want to try your hand at mobile loop sequencing, this is a brilliant starting place. Loops! is free so definitely worth trying out. You cannot, sadly, import your own sounds into the app and the channels are a tad limited in scope, but this aside it’s a very cool way or producing cool little loops that you can export to your SD card, and possibly using for ringtones.
Ease of Use:
While I often see apps like this incredibly complex, Loops! is simple to follow and understand. The large navigation buttons, which pop up when you press your menu button, are easy to use and make navigation effortless.
Frequently Used:
This is very much a hobbyist app, so it really depends on how often you want to play with it. It is fun, so you might find yourself dipping into it on a frequent basis!
Interface:
The interface is a little dated now but still looks quite fresh. Above all it’s very clean and easy to navigate.
