AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Remotely access and control your computer(s) from anywhere over cellular networks & Wi-Fi from your mobile phone!
  • Easy to setup, no techno jargon or advanced setups

Features:

LogMeIn Ignition is an awesome app for remotely accessing and controlling one or more computers on your mobile phone over cell networks or Wi-Fi… how cool is that!?! If you’re not familiar with LogMeIn’s service, they offer innovative solutions to remotely access computers from anywhere provided the remote computer is on and has the client installed; now they’ve naturally brought their offering to the small screen smartphone . I’ve had the pleasure to receive a video demo of the app before it hit public beta. It’s something that really impresses; more so gives you convenient access to files and applications on the go.

Some controls within the app you can:

  • Toggle the keyboard with quick access to Ctrl, Alt, Start Menu, Context Menus, F1 & F2 buttons
  • Scroll and navigate the full window
  • Toggle left click or right click context menu options
  • Pinch to Zoom or scale the window
  • Use in either portrait or landscape mode however the latter is better

I had mixed feelings about the control of the mouse at first but soon got adjusted to how it operates; meaning… you cannot just tap an area that represents a click, however you move the the underlying background while the mouse stays static then click.

I’ve used the app over 3G & Wi-Fi networks and pretty impressed with the speed, of course there is some justifiable lag… you are connecting remotely over cellular networks on a smartphone to a computer. You can toggle the image and color quality which could speed up or slow down connection speed from the Settings menu.

Usefulness:

LogMeIn Ignition is useful to business professionals, sales people, travelers, techies or those that need to access files and information from home or work PCs while on the go. Pricey for the average consumer but not recommended for the average user, plus the features it offers out-weigh the cost. If you’re looking for a lower cost remote desktop client apps for Android try Remote RDP, android-vnc-viewer or Remote VNC Pro, however the trade off is the complexity of setup.

Android Advice™ – How to Setup & Use LogMeIn Ignition:

  • First signup for a LogMeIn account if you don’t already have one
  • Download and install the LogMeIn software on each desktop computer you plan to remotely control
  • Purchase and download LogMeIn Ignition using the QR barcodes we provide above
  • Ensure the host computer is turned on, once logged in there’s no setup within the app as it syncs with the cloud to configure host computers ready to connect to
  • Connect and go!

No I’m sorry, logmein is too expensive. I’ll stay with PhoneMyPC which is only 10 dollar and works perfectly.

I have a few issues with PhoneMyPC:

      1) You are limited to the number of PC’s it will connect to. For someone who frequently helps family members with their PC issues will find it insufficient to only be able to connect to 3 computers. LogMeIn has no limit to how many computers you can use with the product. Currently I have 15 computer accounts installed with LogMeIn Free.

      2) PhoneMyPC is only useful for Windows computers. LogMeIn also works with Mac OS X which alone is enough not to buy the product for me and makes LogMeIn Ignition worth it. I own both Windows PC’s and Mac. Why use a different product with my Mac if I can have one for both? $10 for PhoneMyPC + $10-20 for a similar product for Mac. Might as well buy one that works for both platforms.

      3) I can use administrative features for my LogMeIn users via their website. To my knowledge, PhoneMyPC doesn’t have a web administration site.

      4) PhoneMyPC seems to be designed more for the advanced user who only wants to connect to their own equipment. LogMeIn is very user-friendly with installation and doesn’t require much knowledge to get it to operate.

      5) PhoneMyPC is only available on Android mobile devices. LogMeIn Ignition is available for iPhone/iPad and Android. Of course, having the Android platform is more important however accessibility on a variety of devices puts LogMeIn to the better fit. I can use it on my HTC Evo and my iPod Touch (if I wanted to, but why would I use my iPod Touch anyway??)

      Just my two cents :)

How well do programs like this work for watching video files on your PC? Is the connection between your PC and phone quick enough to display videos at the same frame-rate you would see if you watched them directly on your PC? Or will it appear laggy/choppy?

@jared: Let me make sure I know exactly what your trying to do. You want to use Logmein to watch videos from your PC on your phone? If so, this really isn’t the application to do that. From my experience using it while it was in beta there is a slight lag. The lag is more apparent when watching any type of video using the program. What types of videos are you trying to watch on the PC that you can’t watch on your phone?

        Thanks for the reply.

Yes, that’s what i’m trying to do. There really aren’t any videos that are on my PC that I can’t watch on my phone (that I know of), but it would save me from copying them manually to my phone (which has pretty limited storage capacity). I have a very large video library on my PC (hundreds of movies, thousands of tv episodes) and if I could use this program to access my PC and watch videos (without lag), it would give me access to my entire collection as opposed to whatever I currently have transferred to my phone.

If there is lag or significant loss of frame-rate, however, it doesn’t sound like it would work very well. Also, I did a little research and most of these types of remote-access programs (even the ones for use on PCs) don’t transmit the audio from the PC you are accessing, and if this application doesn’t support remote audio either then that would pretty much mean it’s a no-go for what I want to do, regardless of whether the frame-rate is smooth or not.

@Jared: Definitely sounds like an issue. If you have a 2.2 Android you might find some solutions that will allow you to view audio and video through the browser on your phone using Flash. Try Media Hive (http://www.mhive.org/) for example. Works well using other computers but I never tried it with a mobile device. Feel free to check it out and other solutions like it.

Try orb (www.orb.com). If you install that on your media PC and buy the Android player that should do the trick for you.

Can LogMeIn be used purely within a wireless/wired network which is isolated from the internet?
