Features:
I’ve had my Galaxy Tab WiFi for a while now, and I was excited about testing this keyboard. It’s a keyboard, case and stand all in one product, and that appealed to me.
We’ll start with the stand portion, since it’s the easiest. You can prop your Tab up either vertically or horizontally, and once there, it felt very solid. I didn’t worry about it falling over, or crashing to the desk unexpectedly. I also thought it placed the Tab at just the right angle for working, which was a nice touch.
On the case side, the keyboard actually has foam padding at each of the four corners, and it’s got a lip that comes up just slightly. When you press your Tab into it, it more or less stays in place and helps protect the screen. I go through a lot of screen protectors since I’m notoriously hard on my devices, so I liked that this will help me keep the screen protected. I have to admit, it took me a few tries and looking at the manual to make sure I had it right. It requires pressing your Tab down into the case with a little pressure to make it stick. I was leery of pressing too hard and breaking something, but once I figures out how to fit it into the case, I was fine. getting it back out again was also very easy, just using one of the corners and pulling the tablet up and out. I’m not sure I would trust this if I was going to have it jostling around in a briefcase, but if you’ve got a pouch to keep it more or less in place, this will add a great amount of extra protection to the screen. It does add quite a bit of bulk, however, which is something to keep in mind. Using this as a case will make it both thicker and heavier by a significant amount.
Now, on to the keyboard portion. It’s Bluetooth, so you pair it up with your Tab the way you would any other device. I was able to get it up and running very quickly with no problems at all, and once paired, any time I turned the keyboard on, it found it right away.
The keyboard itself works the way any other keyboard does, but it has some extra built in hot keys that were nice. The Home key was the one I found myself using the most, to quickly bring me back to my start screen from whatever I was doing. There are 18 different hot keys, including the home key – others include a menu key, browser, email and lock buttons, among others. the email key is the only one I had any issues with. When pressed, it comes up with the standard dialogue asking if you want to make a program the default for that action, and several times I tried to make Gmail the default program. For some reason, it wasn’t saving it, however, so I had to choose Gmail from the list on the screen every time.
In practice, I found that the keyboard doesn’t replace touching the screen completely. It does make you faster, especially for typing anything at all, and for accessing functions you use on a regular basis, but I was also using the touch screen quite a bit still for selection and navigation. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, since I didn’t buy a netbook, I bought a touch-screen tablet, but it is something to keep in mind when you buy it. It doesn’t magically make your tablet something else, it just makes it quicker and easier to do certain things.
