Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • 3 fun modes to learn: blending, hinted reading and word creation!
  • Engaging audio!
  • Lots of words to create!
  • Bright characters!

Features:

Kids Learn to Read is a fun and immersive starting block for young children on their first steps towards literacy. The app features a range of fun and colorful characters to engage with, in addition to lots of words to play with and learn.

The app presents three modes: Learn to Blend, Try Reading and Make Words:

Learn to Blend lets children press individual letters to make words. Instead of the typical letter pronunciation, the app utilizes ‘phonic’s- these are the ways in which words are spoken, rather than identified. So, instead of saying ‘M’ as ‘em’ (which is the way we speak it) it is instead pronounced ‘mmm’ which is the way it is spoken phonetically. This helps children understand letters within their context, rather than individually. It is also the preferred methodology for most educators of teaching letters and words to children.

Try Reading is split into two phases. First the child has to speak the letters, mimicking the blending techniques learnt in ‘Learn to Blend’. Once the child has done this, they need to touch the animal the word represents (these are displayed in each corner). This puts the animal on a skateboard and the next phase of the mode. Now the child has to choose the word they read previously- this identifies the correct skateboard helmet for the animal to wear. When the child gets it correct the animal skates away!

These modes are all heavily supported with audio, allowing the children to more or less use the app without adult assistance (although you may want to anyway).

Usefulness:

Kids Learn to Read is a great educational tool that is presented in a fun and engaging environment that kids will enjoy rather than feel they are being oppressively taught. This makes the app fun and make the child feel more like they are playing a game rather than learning. Comprehensive use of the app should help prepare your child for more advanced reading techniques.

Ease of Use:

Designed for a child to use, the app is very simple to use. Additionally, the audio seems to be there at every turn, so controls and actions are suggested and prompted.

Frequently Used:

This is something children could easily use every day. There are lots of words and pictures within the app, so there is plenty to learn without having lots of repetition.

Interface:

The interface is bright, bold and responsive. It’s clear that is a lot of thought has gone into the development; not only of the phonics system, but also the design and UI.
