It also doesn’t offer message filter rules.

I have 50 odd rules to filter my incoming IMAP mail into colours and into folders. I use Thunderbird to do this.

Without this ability all current Android email clients are useless to me.

Unless someone knows of one that does this?

        Unless you have a business ISP account with a static IP you can forget setting up an email server at home, etc. Your emails will soon be blacklisted by other email servers as a spam email server.
        
        Running an email server from home is not the piece of cake it should be. The alternative is to set filtering on the phone–much easier than making everyone set up an email server.

  I use droid 2 with K9 and Thunderbird and had the same issue since I have about 80 folders on my imap server.
  
  Ideally, filtering should be done on the imap server but when I could not do that, I resorted to T-bird’s filtering engine to do the work. Here is how.
  
  I setup my filtering rule but then added to each one the additional criteria “status” isn’t “new”.
  
  What happens then is that I leave my t-bird client on then if I touch a message from the droid and the status becomes other than new (ie., read), then the next time t-bird runs filters, it handles the placement of the message into the correct directory. I like this even on my t-bird client because all of my messages come into ‘inbox’ then once I read then, on the next filter cycle, they are placed into their respective inboxes. I makes it handy from my droid so that I see all of my messages in INBOX first then once I deal with the message, it files itself away in the desired place. Hope that tip may be useful.

It’s also worth noting in the feature list that this phone will let you ‘mark all messages as read’. Something android’s built in client does not do.

  While in the smtp (or outgoing) page, uncheck the box: “auth required” (I hope these are the right words because I have the french version)…
  
  Otherwise field should be somthing like “smtp.gmail.com” or “smtp.my_isp.com” etc.
  
  Suppose your ISP is “foo” you can also type in Google “smtp foo” you should get very quickly what exactly you have to type.
  Port sould be 25 no username, no password (except for gmail).

Thanks to K9 Mail, I can now access my hospital email account. No one in IT or at Verizon could help me, but K9 has allowed me to access a TLS encryption system. Don’t care about bells and whistles. Just wanted my email to get to my new Droid. Thanks.

It looks like a fairly strong e-mail client. Not sure that it is properly deleting from the server my Gmail messages that I delete from the phone. Also, it would be nice if K9 would awaken the phone when a new message arrives. I hear the sound but if the phone is asleep I need to turn it on (and swipe unlock) to view the message.

Is there anyone out there who formerly used Verizon’s Wireless Sync and has now moved to an Android phone with K9? How does that compare? Wireless Sync(now discontinued)actually did everything I wanted(email, calendar and contacts), and I’d like to see if K9 is the answer for that.

I’m getting messages on K9 that I’m not getting on my desktop (using Thunderbird). Also, I’m not getting any spam in K9. I originally installed it because it had a select all option, just so I could easily remove spam from my phone. I figure that I have not configured the settings properly. I’m not familiar with many of the terms, and just guessed on many of them. I wish there were some explanations for some of these terms, like 1st and 2nd class, and where to configure them.

  I’m using Outlook Express on my PC so it does not seems to be a Thunderbird problem.
  I suspect gmail to have a different behavior in pop (or pop3) than other french ISP.

      im a newbie in android and k9 as well..im having difficulty looking for my subfolders(folders with rulings) under INBOX..how can i view it..i used to utilize the stock email client, but the stock email client does not notify me of new emails in subfolders unless i manually sync it..so i changed to k9 hoping that it can sync several folders..any idea how can i seee the subfolders under inbox?

    I believe I’ve solved most of my problems by deleting K9 and then reinstalling it as an IMAP account. This was suggested to me by my provider’s support. Now I see all my emails and folders the way it appears on the server, which is basically a gmail account.

i’m trying to sync my hotmail account as an exchange…. K9 however uses Webdav exchange… Where can I get the necessary information, if there is any?? I need the webdav exchange path.. what could it be…
If I try it with just the server m.hotmail.com and everything empty, I get the following error: cannot connect to server (IOException)

I’ve just noticed that K9-Mail only allows you to mark an email as Spam once you’ve opened it. This is a real security hole as the email can have images that trace if you’ve opened it.

Surprisingly the menu that opens if you ‘long touch’ an individual posting doesn’t have a Spam option.

Hi,
I’m Usinh K9 for 1 month now on 4 accounts.
3 of them works perfectly but gmail (the 4th) is never checked when I press “Check mail”.
If I go INTO gmail folder, then Check mail works (ans check 25 more also)!
Any ideas ?

Configuration :
HTC Desire
All accounts are POP (including gmail)
All accounts are disable from automatic checking (manual mode only)
View from where I see the 4 accounts an press on “Menu” -> “Check mail” (“Verif messages” in french

      Weather you use it or not :
      Did you check the option in K9 to tell K9 to ALSO delete the mail at your provider’s ? :
      From K9 default view, go in the account to see mails then
      - Menu -> More -> Settings* -> Account parameters*
      -> Then comes a white list on a black background :
      - Folder sync* -> Synchronise delete*
      
      * Note : all theses menu names are translated from my french ones and are therefore approxiatives. Hope you will find them…
      
      Doing this will delete all deleted mails in K9 at the NEXT sync on your provider host.

      I had the same problem. (see my post below this one).
      My problem was: On my laptop, I have mozilla thunderbird, and there, I have options to autocheck email every 10 minutes, and also have the option to NOT leave email in server (so it was deleting email every 10 minutes).
      I changed to leave email and delete after 7 days, this way I can check email on desk and on the road…

Is there any way to stop messages that haven’t been fully downloaded from having a different background colour in message lists? (Apart from setting the account to fetch an impractical amount? ;D)

I find it really annoying when using the dark theme. (It’s not *so* bad in the light theme, but I don’t like the light theme and even there I’d prefer not to have a different background colour for such messages.)

  Perhaps you are unaware it is not K9′s job to open and view images. But your installed image viewer?
  
  Install a decent image viewer (the one supplied with Android isn’t good) and you’ll find that it can view your jpeg attachments just fine.

    Thanks for the reply. What I found frustrating was not being able to click on the attachment from within K9 and bring up the photo – all I got was a blurry image of nothing recognizable. I suppose I could save them to the phone, then open, but I didn’t even try that. Are you saying that with a different viewer, I could open photos from within K9?       I just tap on ‘Open’ attachment from within the email and I get given a choice of apps to use to view the attachment.
      
      I find the built-in ‘Image Viewer’ just gives me a null error message.
      
      But QuickPic or ES Image Browser or ASTRO Image Viewer works.
      QuickPic is the easiest as it also allows me to zoom in.
      Look for QuickPic on the Google Market place and install it.
      Works for me on my HTC Desire HD running Android 2.2.1

Maybe I’m doing something wrong, but I tried K9 for a week, and it absolutely mangled any attachments that were sent to me. This was particularly true if I tried to forward an e-mail with an attachment onward to gmail (which I could then check from my laptop).

It would only forward the first of four attached images (and the image would be corrupted) … likewise, it would corrupt word based documents.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

K9 seemed to work fine and looked really good, but I caught it running CPU at 100% for several minutes and several times and the phone was getting really hot, so sorry to say I uninstalled it,

I am now trying improved Email, and so far so good

For info I had 2 gmail accounts and two work IMAP accounts running ands was running the latest version

The only downside, so far, is that if I send a link, the recipient doesnt get a clickable URL. They have to copy and paste the URL, which when you have a few to deal with, is a real pain. Any ideas?

I setup K9 on my wife’s new phone because the stock mail app stopped downloading messages. K9 appears to have the same or similar problem. It downloads messages for a while, but after it’s downloaded so many it just won’t download any new messages. It’s a POP account, and K9 sends these commands: CAPA, STAT, UIDL, QUIT. I’ve verified the server is sending the entire UIDL list. The server account has 450 messages, and K9 has downloaded the oldest messages but won’t download anything newer than about a week ago. Outlook Express has no problems, and OE is configured not to delete the messages from the server. Are there any known issues with mail boxes with large message counts?

I have a mail server on a NAS in my home LAN. The server’s name is FSG. So far I failed to define a K9 Mail account for this server. It seems that it is because the name of the IMAP server must have a dot somewhere. So FSG.ek is OK, but FSG is not. Is it mandatory to have a dot in the mail server’s name? (By the way: my NAS does not allow me to have a dot in the mail server’s name, so that is not an acceptable workaround).

  OK, call it fsg.ek, then edit your localhost file on your windows machine so it has a ip number next to the made up fsg.ek name.
  
  This’ll work on your LAN. But not from the Internet of course.
  
  BTW, if your NAS doesn’t allow fully resolved DNS domain hostnames, then are it can’t be using DNS domain type names.
  
  It may be using a Samba/Windows protocol?
  
  Find out the IP address of the NAS and use that via the localhost file to give the NAS a domain name.

However when i go home and check my mail it disappears off my phone.

How can i get it so I can keep a months worth of email on my new Atrix.

K9 download automatically all the attachments. It is impossible to have only the link to the attachments for example ! IT is really annoying because it takes so much time always, and it takes all your download limit,…etc.
I don’t understand this “advanced” mail has not this optionso important !
IS there a way to contact the developer ?

  I dont know about contacting the developper. I believe he is reading the forum when he have time.
  Anyway, I dont think the “attachement” option you are mentionning is part of the developper’s responsability ; he is just using pre-defined protocols :
  One of IMAP or POP protocol (I think you have to make a choice between them) is made especially for your request (ie : light dowload if attachement not required). Ask google for details and use the one that best suits you.

      Ok, I just made a new test for you on my K9 on one of my 4 accounts (all POP)
      I sent me an attachment and opened my K9 before my computer mail agent did.
      The message was 4 letters and a 47 Ko attachment (pdf file)
      When I checked mail, it was said that the message was 32 Ko. I then cut my Wifi connection (the only one) and try to read the attachment. Noting could come up.
      Another button (all screen wide) suggested me to “get” the complete attachement. I had to set back the connection working to get it.
      
      Note I had to save the file prior I could open it but this is probably due to the type of the file (pdf).
      
      I checked in the options of my account – something like “automatic download” (sorry my interface is in french !) and the limit is 32 Ko.
      
      So I think that POP can only limit by a fixed size of bytes rather than exploring the inside of th message file to discover if ther is an attachment in it.

        So, after your tests it means that K9 really does the job of staying at the 32k limit, and POP is blind to the fact that there are 2 elements (text & attachmt). Ok.
        But My hotmail account is POP, and K9 downloads ALL the attachment automatically… I wonder what you did… to have this working well…. Mmmmmh… weird… here is my email, it will be easier to talk… magicyvan @ h o t m a i l. c o m. Merciii

  Check your download settings. Account Settings>>Fetching Mail>>Fetch Messages up to:
  
  I have mine set at 32k. K9 should not download any messages with attachments over 32k. Any message that appears “grey” in color has not been downloaded completely (thus saving time openning up emails).
  
  If you want to forward an attachement, you will need to “download” first, and then forward on……

      Yea, I have a Imap account through godaddy. I wanted it that way so that my phone and outlook were synced together. I’m no expert, but I think the Pop accounts just “pop you email in” once it hits it’s server. It doesn’t stay there like an Imap account. So it makes sense that the phone is downloading the entire email (with attachments) when it’s a pop account.
      
      Hope that makes sense. We’ve been using K9 for almost a year now and am very happy with it. I run 2 accounts on K9 and my wife runs hers as well.
      
      If you have the option for an imap account, that might help you out.

        I also prefer the imap because if I mark messages “read or unread” on my K9 mail, my Outlook mirrors the same. Helps me keep track and manage my email mailbox better.

        Weird though because Smike92 has 4 POP accounts and the limit works well for him (even though it is not as great as IMAP)… It seems K9 does not work on HTC legend or that I have to configure something special when adding my hotmail account. I’ll try to see what happnes for the other accounts… I’ll do the same test as Dmike92…
        I realized that Maildroid & Enhanced Email DO THE job (by not downloading the attachment WITH MY HOTMAIL account….So, CONCLUSION is = K9 is not well configured or has a bug with the HTC Legend…
        PS: by the way, for the syncing, what are you using ?

  OK I post my findings, hoping the developer will SOLVE THE PROBLEM WITH HOTMAIL accounts !! K9 does have a problem with hotmail accounts, it seems it downloads directly the email AND all the attachments. So the limit to 32k or lower in the options DOES NOT WORK for HOTMAIL !!

  I don’t use the gmail account typically. I only signed up to get my calendar to work properly on my Droid2. My gmail account is set up using the default Droid mail program…….not the K9 program.

I love K9 mail……BUT…for the life of me, I can’t seem to figure out how to change the frequency with which it checks my accounts…right now it is checking every 5 minutes and my battery is just draining!!!! Yes, I can go into each individual account and change the frequency at which email is checked, and even if I set all 6 of my accounts to 1 hour….it will still check it every 5 mins!!!!

Any thoughts are appreciated!!!

K-9 has got fat and slow by the time. No god damn widget available. Looking for alternative. The only function I finally need is that scheduling works.. The stock Sense email just doesn’t synchronize..

I tried MailDroid but found that it likes to place advertisements in various placed. It got annoying so I switched back to K9. I’ve have very little problems with K9 for my neededs. Good luck!

I had Maildroid installed but I didn’t like it much comparing to K9.. I’d rather now how to make stock Mail download messages as scheduled!! It downloads emails only once a day. I had different schedule million times, never works.

I am very technical and have used Linux for over 12 years. I installed K-9 and APG about 3-4 months ago and other than some odd APG/K-9 issues all was fine until the 3.800 update of K-9. 3.800 would just lock up and do nothing. The 3.801 updated followed yesterday, aboput 2 days after the 3.800 update appeared on the Android Market. Tried the 3.801 update and basically no improvement. Not even the menu options for K-9 would show when pressed the Android button for the K-9 options.

Long and short was removed K-9 and tried to install the 3.605 version that had prior and worked. The 3.605 version will not work and caused the android system to reboot and piles of application not responding messages. I then tried to uninstall and then reinstall 3.801 to no avail and same problems. I have now de-installed K-9 Mail and frankly do not have the interest to debug its issues.

If that is not enough somehow K-9 has also messed up the GMail application such that it also hangs when trying to get main and has application not responding messages.

Of course one cannot even try the debugging options if one cannot get into the preferences menu and/or K-( is flagged as application not responding. With all due respect to those giving their own time to develop and/or maintain such an important application and impact to other android applications is you have to test, test, test. I am very versed and adept with OSs, Unix and Linux. This would is a disaster for a non-technical user. As such for a technical user that has spend many hours today and over the last 3 days to get K-9 and GMail applications to work again and neither to any avail I will go back to using the hokey and time consuming process of using GMail and my other eMail accounts via the Web interface and those that need a reply from me will have to wait until I am home to reply so my eMails continue to be digitally signed.

Do not contact me about the issues. I am not interest in spending any more time on this given the nature of the problems and the piles of time that will be consumed by those who may or may not find or be interested in the issues.

Just installed K9
because I HATE HATE HATE the email that came with my Droid X II.
So far, I have discovered that yes, I can edit previous emails (yeah!), send an email and have it go to a sent mail folder (yeah!) — though I found NO setting for this.

What I am having trouble with is getting all my folders and their email to download. To save the sent mail, it created a new sent mail folder so that I now actually have 3: this new one, the one on the server, and the one my windows phone created. It also again created it’s own trash folder and will do so for drafts and spam although these already exist on the server. Please tell me how to fix and get all my folders and their emails to load?

2. I have a LOT of email accounts and many are already set up in the program that came with the phone. Anyway to get K9 to interact and copy the settings rather than my spending a day recreating?

3. How do I set k9 as the default email client so that when elsewhere and creating an email, it automatically goes into K9 BUT ASKS ME which email address I want to use?

4. Can I move emails around not only between folders in one email account but also from one email account to another without having to send it there?

5. Can K9 (or an adjunct) allow me to send messages with return receipts returned to me after the reader reads the message?

6. I noticed that in the old program, I could not copy say a password that was not hyperlinked in the text of the message. Do I have a better abiltiy to cut, copy and paste from & to messages in K9?

7. What does Swype do and how does it help in K9?

8. Can I pinch in and out to expand or contract my view in K9?

  When you open KMail, I think the two first lines are what you are looking for (at least the second one) and the following lines shows you all you accounts.

      I think you’re referring to the ability to preview the first line or two of a message and I’m talking about something different. If you and I have an email exchange consisting of, say, 3 messages/replies from each of us, that’s a thread of 6 messages. Right now it looks like the K-9 app simply shows each of those 6 segments in chronological order. And since I get messages from other people throughout the day, those are mixed in as well. I’m looking for a way to consolidate all those 6 segments together in my inbox. So they’re collapsed into one message, I touch it and it expands to all 6 segments. I don’t see an option for that, so now those 6 segments are spread out across my inbox with other messages in between them. Does that help clarify my question?

Can you help…I have been using K9 for about 3mos now with 3 email accounts (one Gmail and two Pop3) and it has been working great. Out of no where one of the pop3 just stops sending emails. I get the emails but now when sending I keep getting this “550 Permanent Failure”. I have checked to confirm my in and out ports as well. How do I fix this???? Very, very frustrating to say the least. I have deleted and re-installed the app 4x and the same results.

Any help?

  Messages impossible to send deals with the smtp server. As long as you dont have a new address mail, pop server will remain good.
  
  So there are 2 possible reasons :
  1) If this is a new account, K9 wants to make Push mode. If you dont want and specify smtp, K9 will configure it ‘secure’ with a specific port number. Try ‘no secure’ and use normal port (25).
  2) If you’re out somewhere (not at home), it is possible that you may have to change smtp server to accomadate the curent one you are trynig to use instead of the the one you use at home.

Recently this app has refused to start and I get ‘The application K-9 mail (process.comfsck.k9) has stopped unexpectedly’.

Tried updating and problem persists.

The suggested solution to delete data and setup accounts again is not acceptable. If I do that I may as well install an alternative app.

Shame that the developer does not care to fix. In fairness it’s probably not his fault but more likely a result of Google’s continuous development (read tinkering and breaking).

One day Google will realise that the agile development model is a crock of s&*t and just leads to a poor customer experience.

Andriod? Never again for me.

Any ideas on why I am unable to see any folders but In, Out, Drafts, Sent, Trash. Have set all IMAP server info correctly and have tried changing folder class settings.. Serverside I have approx. 60 folders in roughly 4 nested levels. Driving me a bit crazy at the moment.

Also is there a way to simply delete the standard signature. Not my style when replying to business emails on the road.

  what does your “folders to display” say? You can select “all” here. I’m just guessing at this point though. I haven’t played with optional folders too much.

For some reason, K9 has gotten very slow on my HTC Incredible. In particular, moving between messages is incredibly slow – on the order of seconds. I don’t know if this is because my SD card is “too slow” or if something else is going on – it feels like it’s taking a hugely long time to render the text. The second time I access a message “seems” faster… help? It’s to the point of being unusable, which is really sad.
