JuiceDefender Install

JuiceDefender. Save power and extend battery life (a lot!) by controlling the device APN (data connection) and/or WiFi. You can schedule regular APN/WiFi activation to let background data sync occur and have APN/WiFi enabled while the screen is on. It also helps in minimizing distractions. Note: some features require UltimateJuice!

AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Save battery power on Android phones!
  • Reduce distractions by allowing data syncing when phone is awake!

Cons

  • Not really a con but be sure to disable when listening to streaming music apps, else it will cut your connection.

Features:

JuiceDefender Android App focuses on saving battery power on Android phones by managing your data connection settings known as APN. When the screen is asleep (black screen) JuiceDefender turns off your data connections; that being 3G or whatever connection speeds you may have as well as Wi-Fi. This prevents syncing of email, contacts and calendars. When you wake the phone these settings resume again. With their Pro version add-on known as UltimateJuice, you can fine tune the advanced settings at a granular level to set profiles when you would like JuiceDefender to be enabled.

Usefulness:

Android phones are notorious for eating battery power as you start consuming more apps. JuiceDefender can help ease some of this burden by stopping some of the data or Internet traffic which some apps depend on to run in the background; therefore these apps can resume their normal functions when the phone is awake.

Ease of Use:

The default settings are sufficient enough however you can fine tune them in the advanced settings menu.

Frequently Used:

If enabled JuiceDefender is intended for use every time your phone is in sleep mode.

I’m in the process of reviewing this app myself. I’ve found it very useful in combination with several other apps, including Screebl Pro (from http://www.keyeslabs.com) and also to some degree Locale (www.twofourtyfouram.com).

So far, I’m extremely impressed. It’s an excellent application that can provide real tangible benefits, with the assumption that it is USED CORRECTLY.

    Nice review.

You really – REALLY – need to note when reviewing future Android apps WHICH Android OS version (v1.5, v1.6, or v2.0) it is programmed for. In this instance, JuiceDefender is ONLY for v1.6 handsets and greater. It is one of my greatest pet peeves, and a tremendous time waster to boot (when I go searching fruitlessly on Android Market), to get excited about an app after reading a good review only to find that it’s not available to ME on my v1.5-based HTC Hero….

Amazing app. Has more than doubled my battery life since I started using it. I have been telling all the people I know with Android phones about this.

This is great for the new HTC Desire HD, the battery life is hardly enough to last the day (not suprising given the size odf the screen), so these sort of apps are a must if you have a phone like this.

There is a serious problem with this app on pay-as-you-go data plans: I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab that I use almost exclusively on WiFi. My data plan only gets charged if I use it, but then it automatically gets charged 3.50 euros for a full day. Since JuiceDefender automatically activates mobile data periodically, having it installed would increase my mobile bill by about 100 euros per month. Not really what the doctor ordered — I was forced to uninstall it.

Is your Galaxy Tab a 3G + Wifi model? If so, you can turn the “Mobile Internet” off by holding down the Power button and selecting to turn it off. That way, you prevent apps from using it. An app shouldn’t automatically active mobile internet on it’s own.

        Hi Jason,

Yes, I know. But as far as I can see Juice Defender’s modus operandi pretty much depends on regular use of mobile data, at least in the free version. I played with the settings for a while but they weren’t very intuitive and I couldn’t quickly find a way to get it set up for a primarily WiFi-based configuration. My impression was that this might be possible in the paid version, but I wasn’t entirely sure and I wasn’t willing to buy it just to find out…

I keep hearing good things about this app but when I tried buying the ‘ultimate’ I just go “Item cannot be found”. So tried buying the “premium”…

    “Item cannot be found”.

Figured ah, it’s because I installed the beta. Uninstalled, went to the market thing, got the standard version..

    “Item cannot be found”.

Finally tried going to the company site. They have a ludicrous “contact” system, consisting of some “give us an idea” thing, which relies on your “idea” getting votes for them to notice it.

    I mean, dude..?

Somehow I suspect “I can’t buy your app, it keeps saying item cannot be found’ isn’t going to get many votes…

They have ZERO alternative means of contact, so best of luck if you have any other support issue after buying.

The free version is somewhat crippled – all the best bits are paid only, and as that’s not an option I can’t recommend the thing.

    Not impressed, at all.
