Jetpack Joyride. The action-packed fly until your crash platformer game
Sep 7, 2012 7:40 AM –
Jetpack Joyride is a new title from the developers that brought us Age of Zombies, the splatter-filled time-travelling action romp featuring the engagingly meat-headed Barry Steakfries. Barry is back in this title and donning a powerful jetpack. Gameplay is the style where you go for as long as you can without crashing/dying but there are loads of bonuses and cool extras to collect as you progress. Featuring exciting graphics, cool sound and fun-filled gameplay, Jetpack Joyride is a blast of enjoyable silliness that’s hard to put down.
Price: Free, plus In-app purchases
Tested on: HTC One X
Pros & Cons:
- Awesome graphics!
- Top-notch sound!
- Easy to play!
- Very addictive!
- Loads of extras to collect!
- Only available currently in the Amazon App Store.
- Can feel repetitive.
Jetpack Joyride sees the return of Barry Steakfries. This time he’s found himself stumbling into a laboratory of some kind and wearing a jetpack. The game is essentially a side-scrolling romp with Barry having to avoid various obstacles, collecting coins and trying out various extras and gadgets.
Controlling Barry is quite straight forward, just press the screen to power his jetpack and subsequently move him up and down, much like controlling the helicopter in classic arcade games like Copter. Jetpack Joyride is a game that essentially keeps going on indefinitely until you crash/die. Not dissimilar to the recently reviewed Probe the Humans. While this makes for exciting and frenetic gameplay, it can feel somewhat repetitive after prolonged play. Great perhaps for 20 minutes at a time, a bit tiring if you play for much longer. That aside, it’s still a brilliantly casual and engaging freemium title that continues to reward over time.
There are various bonuses to grab which will help you. These include things like teleportation which jumps you forward slightly, vehicles, giant snake things and more. Barry’s kit can be upgraded by visiting ‘Stash’. This includes upgrades to his pack, helmet clothing and more. You pay for items either via the coins you have earned or by in-app purchases. I did think the prices are a little on the steep side for even the entry-level kit so, while the game is playable, there is always that feeling that you’re going to have to spend real money if you want to seriously upgrade.
I should further be mentioned that, currently, the game is
only available in the Amazon App Store (Update: now available in Google Play). This means only users located in the US, UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain can download it. Which kind of sucks for people outside those countries, but- it should be remembered- Amazon until recently only allowed access outside the US so at least it represents some progress that they now have opened up slightly.

Playing Jetpack Joyride is like receiving tiny doses of gaming joy. Gameplay is remarkably slick and action-filled, the music is superb and there are so many things to collect and accumulate it’s continually enjoyable and very addictive. I think some of this effect is sullied by the unattainable (unless you pay) gadgets but the game is incredibly rich even without these. It is, however, the kind of game that might easily sway you into investing in new kits just to help boost your score.
Highly! It features very casual, yet very potent gameplay that’s increasingly hard to resist. Try having just one go… it’s impossible!
The graphics are 2D and side scrolling but incredibly fluid and fast. The visuals are full of colour and animation- just check out the lab workers as they scurry for cover.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
The sound is first-rate, thoroughly detailed and jam-packed with sound effects and excellent music.
