I recently called T-Mobile’s customer service to cancel handset insurance had been paying for on my old G1 then switched to Nexus One on a personal account. There were reports of handset insurance from the carrier did not cover the Nexus One since it sold through Google.
However until recently this is no longer the case. You can insure the phone if lost, stolen or damanged but it wont cover the extended warranty; mechanical or electrical faults under premium handset protection.
Prior to learning this I literally installed almost all Android stealth and security apps (Mobile Defense, WaveSecure Mobile Security, Lookout Mobile Security, iTag, etc.) in preparation for the gamble if my DROID baby left my side. The extra five bucks a month is worth the peace of mind. Have the N1 and a T-Mobile customer? Is your phone covered, I recommend calling customer support to double check.

My N1 was insured by T-Mobile before I even had it in my possession. The day I ordered my N1 (unlocked) from Google, I drove over to the local T-Mo store to pick up a contract free sim and the guy offered me insurance on the phone (he knew it was a N1). I never needed insurance on my iPhones, but it was sure frustrating not to have it as an option.
I’m never getting insurance on gadgets/equipment that I can afford to replace. It’s a waste of money in the end. $5/month for this gadget, $3 dollars for that gadget, an extra $100 for an extended warranty for another one, etc, etc.
And often, these insurances only promise to replace your lost/damaged phone with a ‘compatible’ one. And the word ‘compatible’ covers quite a wide range, usually to the lower end…
Of course this changes if you’re prone to loosing or damaging your phone. Then it may be worth it.
