Respect knuckles to Samsung Vibrant Hacks for figuring out how to tether the Samsung Vibrant Android smartphone without the need to root with the use of Samsung’s Kie synchronization software! Many non-techies especially business folk do not know about nor care for rooting or even know that Vibrant is running Android 2.1 and native tethering features are not introduced until Android 2.2. This hack makes it easy to obtain up to 3G mobile Internet speed for your laptop or netbook via USB tethering.

How to USB Tether Samsung Vibrant without Rooting
- Download and install Samsung Kies from the UK (US version might not work)
- Put your Samsung Vibrant into “Samsung Kies” mode by going to Settings » Applications » USB settings
- Connect the phone to the computer via USB then press the Home button (you should see “Connected”)
- Open Samsung Kies program, your Samsung Vibrant should be recognized
- Click “Tethering” icon then “Settings” icon
- For APN Name enter “epc.tmobile.com” and Phone Number “*99#”
- Hit Okay, then hit the 2-phones icon button
- There is about a 5 second delay but the Samsung Kies program should say “The Internet is connected”
It would be interesting to see this hack used for AT&Ts’ Captivate, Sprint’s Epic 4G and Verizon’s Fascinate when they debut provided you have the correct APN names and phone numbers. If you would like an even easier way to USB tether there are a few paid Android apps that can help you such as PDANet or EasyTether.
