How to Update Samsung Moment with Android 2.1

Sprint has not officially announced the update but the official update is on their website. We updated one of our Samsung Moments and wanted to present a quick and easy guide so you avoid the pitfalls we had in updating to the latest Android 2.1 update 1 software.

1. Know the Facts. This update WILL WIPE YOUR PHONE. You will lose contacts, email, SMS text messages, apps, etc.

2. Backup Solutions and Resources. Even though this will completely wipe your phone, don’t fear there are backup and restore solutions. The least of your worries are contacts, email and apps. Google automatically syncs these with the Gmail account you signed up with to initially start using the phone. Once you’ve wiped an Android phone, restoring contacts and email are a breeze once you sync from the Google cloud again.

Apps have to be re-downloaded. Simply sign in with the same Google or Gmail account you initially downloaded or purchased apps with and you WILL BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD AGAIN AT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE. To make remembering what apps you’ve downloaded easier we recommend using AppBrain. Head over and sign up, install AppBrain Market Sync so it creates a list of your installed apps online. Later you can use this to re-download from the Web versus searching and manually installing each on the phone.

3. Remove Old Samsung USB Drivers. If you have installed any Samsung drivers installed on your computer these MUST be removed (if they are not installed skip to the next step).

  • To check for and remove Samsung USB Drivers go to Start » Settings » Control Panel » Add or Remove Programs.
  • Locate the item titled “SAMSUNG Mobile USB Driver XXX”. Click “Change/Remove” then “Remove” option.
  • When asked “Do you want to completely remove the selected application and all of its features?” click “OK”.
  • Click “Yes, I want to restart my computer now.”

4. Software Needed. Get Sprint’s official update via this link to download the 101MB software file. Install the software, it will prompt to restart your PC, do so (be sure you have Admin rights on your PC). After restart, notice on the Desktop a file “SWUpdate”, open and follow on-screen instructions.

5. Prep the Phone. Remove your SD Card and the back plate but keep you battery in as the process will ask you to remove the battery twice plus plugging the phone into USB twice… and we don’t want the back plate in the way. Be sure the phone is fully charged!

6. Install Samsung Drivers & Update the Phone. Using the SWUpdate software as an on-screen guide, follow it as it prompts you to:

  • Pull the battery and reinsert.
  • Press and hold Volume Down button, Camera button then End button (in that order) until you see the “Downloading” screen.
  • Insert USB cable into phone, once drivers installed it will ask to pull and reinsert the battery.
  • Again press and hold Volume Down button, Camera button then End button
  • Then asks to reinsert USB cable (ensure the cable and PC connects, look in the bottom right for “Connected”).
  • Click Start Update button. It will copy the software to the phone. You should see progress bars on PC and phone move to 100%.
  • The phone will copy the ROM and show text on the screen then restart itself
  • Once restarted, there will be a 2-3 minute delay to boot up for the first time

7. Post-Install Check. Immediately you will notice you have to slide the left green padlock icon to unlock the phone. There still only 3 home screens, unlike 5 on Nexus One. To get your contacts, email, and apps back go to:

  • Home screen » Settings » Accounts & sync » ensure “Background data” and “Auto-sync” are checked » finally Add your Google or Gmail account. After it syncs you will have your contacts and email restored.
  • Go the to Market to re-download your apps (you must sign in again, use the same Google or Gmail account you initially downloaded or purchased with)

Troubleshooting and FAQs:

Issues with Connecting the USB Cable

We went wrong on the connection of USB cable. For some strange reason it would not recognize the connection. To ensure it was connected we unplugged the cable from the PC and phone completely then plugged back in each time. Watch the bottom right corner of the SWUpdate software for “Connected”.

What if the Worst Happens and the Update Doesn’t Complete, Will it Brick my Phone?

In our experience NO. The first time we tried it… on the last step the SWUpdate app hung during the USB cable issue mentioned above. We waited around looking stupid for 30 minutes assuming it was doing something but wasn’t. Then restarted the PC, pulled the phone battery and tried all over again being more conscious of the cable and breezed through it.

How Long Does the Process Take?

From start to finish about 20 minutes. Preparation takes the most time, the actual update was the shortest.

Why Doesn’t Sprint Send the Samsung Moment Update Over the Air, Why Must I do this Myself?

Just did it on my friends. Worked PERFECTLY! I would also take out the SD card, just in case. You don’t need it in there for the update to go through.

Thanks so very much for the excellent walk-through. I haven’t used it yet. I must admit, I’m still nervous about trying anything so involved, because I just got my Samsung Moment last week and I love it sooo much. I trust the information that you’ve given, I just keep thinking, it will be my luck that I follow the instructions to the T and yet, encounter a problem that destroys my phone. What can I say? It’s the worrier in me.

If nothing else, I realize now, why apps that I should be able to download in the market through my appbrain sync, are not showing up in searches when I want to install them. So I’m going to try hard to muster up some courage to get this update installed, so that I can finish customizing my phone. Of course that raises the question…..”With all of these fantastic apps at every turn, will I ever be finished?”

Well I think I’m finally ready to take the leap, however, I’m a bit stumped. Last week, I downloaded the update link from the Sprint site. I was about to remove the current driver, but I want to be sure that I am removing the right thing, since it’s not labeled exactly the way you have described in the instructions.

What I see is: SamsungSimpleDL (If I hover on it, the product version is 1.0.008 – if that helps)

The only other Samsung related software I see is Samsung USB Driver for Mobile Phones V5.2.0.0 (but I’m assuming that’s the new update that I’ve downloaded)

So I need help with confirming that the SamsungSimpleDL is what I need to remove or does it stay? If it stays, is that because the Samsung USB Driver for Mobile Phones has overwritten the original driver?

        • By Android Tapp on May 28, 2010 at 6:45 am:

If you’ve already completed the steps of the “SamsungSimpleDL” software and have “SWUpdate” installed and on your desktop it’s fine to remove it. SamsungSimpleDL is just equivalent to Step 4 above. Long story short… SamsungSimpleDL is software that downloads SWUpdate application versus you manually visiting the link to download.

          Taking the plunge! :D

Ok…..so it’s after 2 in the morning and I’m finally ready to take the plunge and update my phone to 2.1. I have your site up and the instructions from the Sprint site. Well I can’t even get past the first step and I want to scream! The back is off, SD card out, phone is on, and I press the “down volume button, “camera button,” and the “end button” in that order and I hold them. Within that time of holding, all I got was my normal startup. I see my homepage and all of the operations that normally occur with the startup of my phone. After the first minute my screen went dark. I’m thinking, ‘Ok. How much longer am I supposed to hold these buttons? I wasn’t even expecting to see my homepage.’ Finally, after about 3 minutes, I stop holding the buttons and read the instructions again. Although I have read them probably a dozen times while holding the buttons. Nothing warns that there will be an extended amount of time to hold the buttons and urges patience in the process. So I decide to start the whole process again and see if I just didn’t wait long enough. Well the second time, I hold the buttons for over five minutes. In that time, I was shown my homepage, just like before……the screen went dark for a bit and just when I thought, the “downloading” icon was about to pop up, it turned out to be my homepage again. What am I doing wrong? This is why I was so afraid to engage in this process for 2 weeks. I just knew that something would not go as planned, because that’s my luck. So anyway, I’m going to try it one more time. Perhaps since my normal screen timeout of one minute is still set, that could be causing me to miss my cue. I’m going to change it, in order to keep the screen illuminated and see what happens. If that doesn’t work, then I’m holding off on it until one of you gets back to me.

Thanks in advance for your help.

@shonte the combo of holding Volume down, Camera, and End buttons should be 5 seconds max. Can you double check the order? We would have done a vid, be the footage kinda sucks, so we’ll refer you to this two really long vids on how to do it:

Antonio, please help me!! I followed the instructions to a T and right after I hit start download I get this “e- big partition size” error message. I retried the process several times=same message. My phone won’t even start now. I am about in tears wishing I never found this site. My contract is not even close and I cannot afford a new one.

          • By Jason Norment on November 9, 2010 at 11:08 pm:

Mary: The issues seems to be with the update itself as many users on many Android forums around the web have reported the same error. It appears that the update is causing many phones to be “bricked” and without the technical knowledge to manually flash a phone your basically stuck with sending it in for repairs. I assure you I looked all over the web and the steps Antonio has given are the correct steps to update the Moment. It’s an issue with the phones and the firmware. Hopefully Samsung and Sprint will fix the issue soon.

Sprint did not automatically push this update to consumers nor sent notification as it would require a wipe of the phone to update. Yes, the link so lead you to Sprint’s website where you can find the software to download. That in addition to this guide helps you through the update process.

So, we are trying to update the Moment. The program is on the Download screen & it has been here for a good 10+ minutes. The bar says “ready” & there is not any progress showing on the bar, nor the phone. This is the 2nd time I’ve tried this, even called sprint & they said: if it’s been a long time, like over an hour, then call us back. What kind of an answer is that? Anyway, I saw that is says it takes about 20 minutes to download. Did anyone else have this problem with the status bar not updating?
    Thanks, Gina

Yes, it is connected. My pc ended up freezing 2 times. Now we are trying to install the update from our other pc. I notice that the left side of the bar says that it is doing “stuff”. It keeps stopping at [debug] setup connection. That’s when my pc froze, now my husbands pc seems to be ‘stuck’ at this same point. It’s been about 15 minutes & there is not any progress in the progress bar. It still says “ready”.

        Anymore suggestions?

Duuuhhh……well I realized that I wasn’t pushing the camera button. It looks like perhaps it is a walkie talkie button. lol. So anyway, once I realized my mistake and did it right, the phone went directly to the downloading screen. However, the good vibrations were short lived, because just like Gina, when I got to the last step, the bars on the phone or PC never moved. They just sat there in ready mode. I thought well perhaps my error was in not removing the USB cable from the phone and only taking it out of the PC…..nope. Not it. Could the problem be that I bobbled the battery a bit and it slipped back in, the last time that I attempted to remove it and perhaps that somehow set things off course? Naahhh…..that didn’t seem to be the problem either. Ok, then maybe it’s because I have another window open (Android Tapp instructions on how to update to 2.1). I thought, ‘Maybe everything else needs to be closed on the PC and it will work.’ Not even close.

Well I disconnected the USB from my PC and phone 3 times, while it was in the perpetually “ready” state, scared out of my wits, as though I had to choose between pulling the red wire or the blue wire. I was mentally relaying my pleas of “Please, please, please don’t let me brick my new phone,” to the smartphone powers-that-be. That seemed to work, thank goodness, so at least something went right tonight. In the meantime, I have no clue what to do about this and why I can’t get past the last step of this nerve-tweaking process.

It’s after 4 in the morning now. I started this journey 2 hours ago. Is it too early to drink, because I’m really feeling like I need one after this? Of course, I’d be hard pressed to find any alcoholic beverages in my home. The closest I could come to it at this moment would be a glass of cooking wine or some apple cider vinegar. Ehhh……I’m going to bed.

Hopefully one of you Android Tapp Extraordinaires will have a solution waiting to greet me when I awake. I can only hope. Thank you in advance for your help. :)

LMAO! I placed some vids in a reply to Shonte, so have a look at those. Part 1 takes you thru the PC setup side of things and Part 2 on the phone. It shows how long some parts should take.

But it seems on the last step your PC is not recognizing the phone when you insert the USB cable (why I do not know, but my personal solution was to remove both ends and reinsert). Ensure that in the bottom right corner of the PC software the text changes from “Ready” to “Connected”. Once connected the Android 2.1 software will fire off from PC to phone, the whole process is less than 30 seconds. Then the following rebooting process take up to 5 minutes.

Let us know how it goes.

Ok. So finally after much turmoil, screaming, and a few tears, I have the 2.1 update installed. I also installed the LauncherPro beta, that I’ve wanted since the first week that I got my phone. I’ve chosen to use the 7 homepage option and I even spent many days making a custom homepage to fit it. Well now I can’t understand why I can’t upload it as my wallpaper. It will let me select it in the folder, then it does nothing. Same ol’ default sunflower or daisy or whatever……it’s not what I want! I decided to test it and see if one of the LauncherPro selections would work. It did, but HA…..there are only two of them. What’s that about? How can they call it a gallery with only two choices? Is there an add-on or something that I’m supposed to install for more wallpaper options? I’m just curious, because I picked their colorful design and it loaded to the homepage with no problem. Not that any of this really matters, because I didn’t spend a week making my own 7 screen homepage, not to be able to display it on my phone. Is there something I’m doing wrong?

Nicely done! Glad to see you press on and got the update… Sweet right?!?

In Launcher Pro there are only the few choices so nothing you’re doing wrong. My guess it that the developer plans to extend that section more either as designer care to contribute or royalty free backgrounds become available.

If you’re looking for backgrounds, there are a lot of resources. Check out Backgrounds we reviewed a while back. Plus we’ll have reviews for Androlib Wallpapers and Mabilo Wallpapers soon, which have some cool walls!

I can’t ever find a general area to post a question or concern here. So I have once again, returned to this thread, although my dilemma has nothing to do with the 2.1 update. Am I missing something?

So anyway, I cannot believe how hard it has been to find an app or software to make a slideshow screensaver for my phone (Samsung Moment). It surprises me that the feature isn’t already built-in. My crappy LG Rumor had it! Every time I do a search, I am made to believe that the link will have the information that I’m looking for. But once I click it, the information is unrelated to my search or it’s for how to make slideshows for your computer, when I clearly stated that my device is a smartphone.

I have been doing this search off and on all week and I’m really disgusted that I can’t find anything. It’s not like this is a new concept or something. Less worthy phones, built years ago, have the capability built-in. So I am asking for someone…..anyone…… to please tell me what apps there are available or software that will allow me to create a slideshow screensaver for my phone. Free would be great, but I would spend a few bucks for something that is easy to use and works well…..not one of those $29.95 shareware jobbers. I’m not trying to make a business out of this. I just want to have a nice and functional slideshow screensaver on my phone. It also, should not be a static image screensaver. Where’s the fun in that? It has to scroll from one side to the other. If it has other features like fade-in or page flip, then those would be bonuses. It’s the sideways scrolling that I’m really looking for.

For the pics that I want to use, I need fluid movement. Not that Wallpaper Rotator app that I tried. Ugh! I should be able to set the photos to scroll at close intervals (within seconds of each other, instead of several minutes apart or even days). Plus the pics need to take up the whole screen with no spaces in between them, so that the slideshow is seamless, because the photos are a continuation of what’s in front of it and what’s behind it, making an endless loop.

Ok. I think that covers it. Someone must be able to help me. If you don’t know, perhaps a friend of yours does.

            Many thanks

We actually have a Ask Abby type column called “Ask NerdGirl” which you can email questions or post in the comments and NerdGirl will thoroughly research and answer any of your Android questions, plus the community chimes in with answers too. I’ve forwarded this to her, if you have any other questions, please feel free to email nerdgirl@androidtapp.com.

I personally haven’t looked for a gallery type app you’re referring to… maybe because I’m spoiled by the awesome 3D gallery app built into the Nexus/HTC Desire version of Android 2.1 (which was robbed from Samsung Moment version of 2.1). This gallery easily plays a full screen slideshow plus a lot more features. Not to rub it in, but we’ll have a search and let you know what we find. In the meantime look for NerdGirl’s recommendation in her column soon.

Yaaaaayyy! There are responses waiting for me as I start my new day. Just as I had hoped. Thanks Antonio. :D I forgot to clarify in my ranting in the wee hours, that the window did state each time that it was frozen on “ready,” that it was connected. So that’s why I’m really baffled about all of this. But anyway, thanks so much for the quick responses and I will watch the videos in hopes of a solution. My phone is currently charging, so I may try the update again when it’s ready. I’ll keep you posted, of course.

BTW, I didn’t mean to confuse you, Antonio. I AM Shonte. lol. You’re only dealing with one loon here. Somehow, I must not have not been logged in (although, I clearly remember doing so) during my first comment last night and used my real name instead of my screenname. No biggie. I don’t mind sharing it. It just shows the fragility of my state of mind that this updating process has subjected me to.

Now is this the part where I laugh or cry?

I am a first time user of an andriod phone. I transfered over from windows mobile base phone to this samsung moment. I am in love with ease and use if apps download and how easy it was to do this update! THis is coming from someone who has never done an update on anything! Very easy! I would recommend!

I am stuck on the step to connect the phone to the computer and I’ve repetitively done the steps over and over consistently and it never says “connect”. Is there a problem with my system? Also, I tried to un-install the previous driver, like it says, but as soon as it is done, it tells me that I need to contact the provider to have permission to uninstall. Strange. I’ve never come across that message before.

I upgraded my Samsung Moment yesterday without a hitch but now I’m finding myself completely annoyed with some of the features. For example: whenever I touch a key my phone sort of vibrates and I don’t like it. I went to settings and I see something about Hipath or something like that. It’s not on but why is my phone now vibratibrating everytime I hit something and how do I turn it off? Also if I’m on my phone and it rings when I hit ‘hang up’ it automatically goes back to my log in screen which annoys me as well. I think small things are starting to occur and I want to know what is going on?

It sounds like you’re having more issues than most others have.

Regarding the haptic vibration issue. Double check in the Settings menu under Sound settings that “Haptic feedback” is unchecked. Could you be referring to this vibration feedback with on-screen keyboard too? If so in the Settings menu under “Language & keyboard” visit your keyboard’s settings and uncheck “Vibrate on keypress”.

Now that you have Android 2.1 on your Moment, if you’re still having issues I would suggest performing a Factor Reboot (go to Settings then Privacy and “Factory data reset”), which will put a fresh version of Android 2.1 for Samsung Moment right back on the phone, but you’ll loose apps, call logs, text message, settings, etc. just as before.

Keep us updated on how this goes!

Thanks for getting back with me. That’s the problem, it’s not checked. I checked it and unchecked it and it vibrates on both. It’s driving me nuts. The fact that it started doing so last night and this morning doesn’t help either. It’s not on but it vibrates still.

I un-installed anything that had sprint or samsung from the drivers before beginning the update. I followed all the steps just they way they requested but when it came time to plug my phone to my PC it says “Detect Port…” on the bottom left and “Disconnected” on the bottom right. My phone is all ready on the Download screen and I installed what I needed to and have restarted half a million times and tried to unplug and replug into both my computer and my phone several times, trying all 3 USB ports but got nothing. Im ready to scream.

I updated my Samsung Moment last night with no problem. Now that I’m doing it for my daughter-in-law, I get this “e – big partition size” error message. I’ve started over twice but the same message comes up. Anyone figured it out yet?

For all that is gettting the e-big error….this is because you need to update and install the 2.1 first and then install the current update that is on the sprint web site. Until you install the 2.1 update (the update posted to sprint website before the current that is there now) your phone can not understand the new current one

Got the error on my phone as well, basically bricked it. Took it to the store, they plugged it into their machine, couldn’t even get it to revert to previous os.

after months of working with this, i have still yet to get my pc to recognize my samsung moment in download mode. It’s weird… after trying a billion different fixes on the net, my pc finally recognized the phone! so i downloaded 2.1, then proceeded to merrily root my phone using sdx-developers.com

however, one time when i was in the middle of applying a custom recovery (i had done this multiple times before, w/o issue), the drivers broke! randomy, it stopped recognizing the phone again! this bricked my phone to the point where i had to take it to sprint (somehow, they were able to reset it). But to this day after that, my computer will never recognize my phone, whether it be in download mode or USB debugging mode. all it does when i plug it in is charge it. i’ve tried literally evry fix on the internet… all i havent done is reinstall my OS, which i really cant afford to do cuz i dont have an extra harddrive to backup over 20gb of data i have, nor can i afford such an extra harddrive. fortunately, i was able to re-root my phone w/ my gf’s laptop when i went to visit her in college, but it’s still frustrating cuz, whenever i want to get something on my SD card using my computer, i have to pull the battery and put the card into a card reader, download whatever i need on there, then start the long 2-5 minute process of rebooting the phone. it’s so annoying.

If you can’t get your phone to restart the process if it fails or errors during the update process, try this:

    1) Power down phone & remove battery
    2) Insert battery w/o powering phone back on
    3) Simultaniously press the volume down button, green call button & red end button – hold all 3 down until SAMSUNG appears on screen and appears to be turning on
    4) A menu w/ options will appear, choose the bottom option (master reset device) – phone will erase all codes and programming (could take a minute, will show codes on screen being erased in yellow)
    5) When all is reset, will return to previous menu – choose 1st option to reboot the device
    6) Phone will reboot and power on

I’ve had 2 replacement Moments since this happened, and nothing, literally NOTHING has worked to bring my USB drivers back to life. and now, my pc wont even let me uninstall or reinstall the drivers i have… always gets a “fatal error during installation” whenever i try either, regardless of how (add/remove programs, revo uninstaller, deleting the folders in programs, etc). i literally have no idea what to do.

      *Triple facepalm*

      Dude, first, speak clear english.
Second, this SPECIFICALLY says “for the Samsung Moment”. You can’t even upgrade other androids using this program. there is no way to OFFICIALLY upgrade a non-android device to android. Even if you could, it’s likely that your phone physically isn’t powerful enough to handle it. i dont know anything about your phone, but does it even have a touchscreen?

Now, i have heard of people hacking windows mobile phones and the like to have android on theme, but that’s it. maybe if you’re lucky you can find a hack for your phone to get android on it. try xda-developers.com for starters.

e big partition size” resolved when done via the SWUpgrade!!!
I was upgrading from CJ05, the Initial Release, and received this error upgrading to DJ07.

I ending up downloading DE03 to resolve this issue.

      1. Uninstall both Samsung USB drivers, and the current SWUpgrade program.
      2. Reboot
      3. Install the next version in order: I had CJ05, so I then upgraded to to DE03.

      4. Install and follow the instructions and TADA an unbricked phone.
      5. I plan on installing the next upgrades over the air.

I hope this helps ALOT OF PEOPLE.!!!!

That’s not unbricking a phone cuz if the phone is bricked you won’t be able to do nothing with it and I mean nothing.
I would like to thank SAMSUNG and SPRINT for taking away 2.5 hours of my life.

Being pretty tech savvy, I was confident that I could upgrade my phone with no problems. Now, I’m not so sure. ):

I get through the whole process of taking out the battery twice, etc., and even get to the screen where it says to press the ‘start download’ button. Then, after about a minute of the loading bar saying ‘Ready’, I get a pop up window that says this:

“e – dll Cannot open the USB serial port. Code: 2″

No matter how many times I’ve tried, I can’t seem to get past this error code. I’m using the USB cord for an Evo, because I lost the charger shortly after getting the phone last year and have been using the charger for an Evo ever since. Will this make a big different? I’ve tried two different cords, nothing has worked.

    Thanks for any help! :)
