How to Manually Install Android 2.2 on Verizon Motorola DROID

If you don’t already know, Verizon is rolling out the latest Android software (version 2.2) to it’s family of DROID phones this week. However if you don’t want to wait on the official OTA (Over the Air) update you can manually download, install and reap the Froyo goodness of the latest software. Below we’ve included easy steps to manually update your Motorola DROID to Android 2.2:

Note: this is for non-rooted stock Android 2.1 Motorola DROID phones.

How to Manually Install Android 2.2 on Verizon Motorola DROID:

  1. Download the official Android 2.2 software from Google servers Android 2.2 (FRG01B)
  2. Copy the file to your microSD card and name it “update.zip” (Note: not update.zip.zip)
  3. Power off your phone, holding down the “X” button on the physical keyboard and power it back on to boot into recovery mode.
  4. When you see the exclamation point in a triangle symbol “/!\”, press volume up and the camera button to display the recovery options.
  5. Use the d-pad to navigate to “apply sdcard:update.zip” and select it.
  6. When you see “Install from sdcard complete”, select “reboot system now”.
  7. Many users say Flash for Android is not visible in the Market however you can get it directly from this page on Adobe’s site.

Sorry, this manual update is only for the Motorola DROID. Over the air updates for Incredible should hit you soon. Update us when you’ve got it!

Does this count as rooting your phone? aka does this null the warranty?

I followed the steps, yet my Firmware version still shows 2.1-update1. Normal?

Did you see the firmware actually update on the screen? It sounds like some step was missing and all was done was a phone restart.

Now I get an error message: E: Can’t open /cache/recovery/command when in the system recovery screen.

This usually happens if the update ZIP file is named “update.zip.zip” or not placed on the root or top directory of the SD card. Else it should go past this error message and install fine should you receive it granted the above are correct.

Thanks – no luck. I’ll wait for the OTA. So now I gotta figure out how to remove Superuser Permission and then ‘unroot’.

Im sorry for this but people, STOP BEING OF THE RETARD!. ok now, no this wont work for the incredible or the backflip or htc or anything but the droid. im not even sure it will work on the milestone. its like this if you have a windows os and you try boot with an apple disk will it work? NO! droid uses droid update backflip used backflip update.

For the E:signature verification failed try

harminder did you hold in the camera button? its either that to go into the boot settings or the x button on your keyboard. hold in before you turn on your phone untill a sighn like this appears. and the root is the top folder like when you open mycomputer and you double click on c drive youll be in the root of your c (see adress bar)

I have a Moto Droid. Installed this update, worked great, rooted phone with Androot. Then the OTA from Verizon for v2.2 showed up on my phone. Stupidly, I installed it. Root disappeared and Androot no longer works. I tried to re-install this exact same update on the phone and it’s giving me an error status 7 – assert failed when installing. Is there an updated ZIP that will give me 2.2 “back”, but rootable with Androot?

Hi Antonio. I request you to post the steps to upgrade Motorola backflip 1.5 to 2.1 or 2.2 . I am india and Motorola has decided not provide any further updates for Asian -Pacific . This is rude and there are lots of bugs in 1.5. I personnely feel that I have already waisted money on this phone.

    Please help :O
