How to Manually Install Android 2.2 on Nexus One

A few days ago Goggle officially announced Android 2.2 at Google I/O 2010 developers conference. There are reports of a few Nexus One owners receiving the automated update alert, however rollout is at a snails pace. If you’re impatient and want Froyo now follow the steps below to manually update Nexus One to Android 2.2:

Caution: update information is from a premature update build. Side effects will cause you not to be able to access some Protected apps in the Android Market.

Update: Google removed their hosted link so we’ve placed the file on our servers so can download the Android 2.2 firmware for the Nexus One here (45MB).
Important: Copy it to the root of your SD card so it resides “sdcard/update.zip”.
Power off your Nexus One
Hold down the “Volume Down” button as you power the phone back on.
The screen should show your phone’s system searching for various files. Scroll down using the “Volume Down” button to select “recovery” by pressing the “Power” button.
The next screen will have the triangle with an exclamation point, press and hold the “Power” and “Volume Up” buttons at the same time.
From the menu that appears, select “Apply sdcard:update.zip” with trackball.
When the screen displays “Install from sdcard complete” select “reboot system now” and wait for the phone to power back up.

Update: Here is how you get Flash for Android once updated to Android 2.2!

Note: If you’ve Rooted your Nexus One you would have to revert back to the stock Android 2.1 in order to update using this manual install. I’m updating and will give results with video.   Perfectly legit questions. No, its putting the official ROM that will be released on your phone early. Actually if you have Rooted your phone you have to go back to stock ROM to get this.
  
  Oh, there is no 100% certainty it wont brick your phone.

  Had the same error. Turn your phone back on and be sure to the the downloaded file “update.zip” and to MOVE it to the root of the SD Card. So it reads “sdcard/update.zip”

So far so good.. Had to reinstall swype.. . But my question is, how do I move apps to sd card? The boxes are grayed out (even on new apps).. Any ideas?

    App developers have to offer this. So I guess non have done this so far as there wasn’t an option for this yet. Maybe google maps or another google app will have this option?

Very cool! Much faster. Flash games up and running (install Flash 10.1 from market). I also had to reinstall Swype and re-enter some logins. Waiting for developers to allow apps to move to SD-card…

Also getting an Error 7, even though the update.zip file is in the root directory. There must be something wrong with the update.zip file.

Also noted ab error of: E:Can’t open /cache/recovery/command

before it opens the update.zip file.

The finding update, opening update, and verifying update all work, but it bombs out during the Installing update with an “assert failed”.

  What app are you using to rename to “update.zip”? I used Astro so I can see the while name and ensure its not named “update.zip.zip”

    Using the windows “rename” command. It does not produce a “update.zip.zip”, just a “update.zip”.

The zip file is renamed in the windows environment before it is copied to the root of SD card on the N1.

  The phones are identical, I’m truly not sure but think not as it seems Google plays favoritism to its Google Phone. It has actually received the late two updates first.

I was able to update my Nexus one, no problem because I was at stock Ere27 firmware. So far it’s been good, very happy with the updates….even with the Flash on the browser…i thought Steve Jobs said it would explode on my device and destroy the world…but hey it didn’t turn out so bad. I am not getting the triangle with the exclamation mark in it. I copied the file to my sd card. turned off the phone , held down volume and power at the same time . It offers the recovery option. Selected it but then I just get the nexus X . I tried to proceed. I held the volume up and power but I wasnt given the option to apply sd card update.zip. It does say flash sd card. Can anyone tell me why? or what I need to do?
