T-Mobile G1 owners who use the default email app and configure with their POP3 or iMAP email accounts (like: yahoo.com, hotmail.com, aol.com or web-based email for their own websites) have been asking these questions:

  • How do you keep G1 from deleting email accounts?
  • G1 keeps deleting my POP3/iMap Email accounts?
  • Email Accounts Deleting on G1?

It’s not a fix but I got that to stop happening to me… sorta :???:

I have over 20 different email addresses at my various websites, about 5 of them are important and get daily use, so I rely on POP3 email clients. I would enter about 3 accounts and a few hours later it would delete… arrrggghhh!

Here’s what I do now:

  • Add ONLY 1 account per day
  • Try not to clear your Data on the phone from “Settings > Applications > Manage Application > Email” (But at some point you will be forced to as the size of this will grow and we only get 50MB of internal storage)

For some strange reason, it stopped auto deleting my email accounts with more space between adding accounts. I have a max of 3 accounts listed right now but very curious as to how many can be entered use this method. If this works for you or not, let me know in the comments below. Like I said, it’s my lil work around, not sure if it works for others.

On another note:

If you need the configuration details for most email ISPs, here’s a great guide from Harmon-PD on the the T-Mobile G1 message board: http://forums.t-mobile.com/tmbl/board/message?board.id=Android3&thread.id=16556

man I’ve never had that problem. Does it happen with the latest RC30?

my opinion is try using K9 mail, it’s an app on the market that works just like the default email app, but it lets you choose how many emails to retrieve (10, 20, 30 etc). it also lets you download attachments. and it has exchange support.

@haitiankid4lyf It happens with K9 too. But my work-around worked for it too. It’s a flaw in Android’s email functions.

it happens for me too. My email is through AT&T and whenever I add it to the Email app or to K9 it’s erased within hours. It’s the only email account I’ve tried adding and it always gets deleted.

The problem with lost email accounts should be fixed with K-9 release 0.105. 0.015 is in beta on the K-9 site, and will hopefully be going to the Android Market soon.

Thanks Dan for sharing that. Would you care to explain what the problem is why it does that? BTW K9 is a great app that’s apart of my essentials. Should make its way on this site soon :-)

  6. Dan says:

I believe the problem was that the core Android preference storage mechanism uses an XML file to store the user selected preferences. However, in some way it must not protect against certain characters in the type preferences from causing problems with the XML file formatting. When this happens, all of the preferences are lost. Starting in K-9 version 0.104, I modified the code so as to use a custom-for-K9 database-backed preferences storage mechanism, which should not be susceptible to interference from the user-entered preference data.
