HeadWar is a Manga-style gem game of strategy Install

HeadWar is a cunning strategy game that mixes Manga-style visuals and plot with traditional collect-three-of-a-kind gameplay- akin to the likes of Bejeweled. As with other such games, it’s very addictive and challenging. Definitely give it a look if you enjoy the brain and puzzle genre.

AndroidTapp.com Android Game Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Addictive and familiar gameplay!
  • Lots of levels and missions!
  • Two modes of play!
  • 120 missions to complete!
  • Cut scenes and reviewable movies!

Cons

  • Graphics are a little unresponsive and laggy.
  • Could use include a better tutorial.

Features:

HeadWar is a neat Manga-style game that revolves around a dystopian storyline. In a world where grouping icons together in a grid accumulates points to complete missions, it subsequently features familiar gameplay for anyone who has dipped their toe into games like Bejeweled. Love them or hate them, they’re stupidly addictive, and HeadWar is no different.

Much like other games in this genre, the missions get progressively harder. You have a set score to achieve before you complete the level and there’s a timer which runs down gradually. You eventually contribute, through successful play, to the ‘Special’ weapon which wipes out three columns of icons and awards loads of points- definitely worth saving for when pickings are low.

The gameplay is quite forgiving in that it reshuffles the icons when you run out of options and you even get bonuses which boosts the Special weapon. It’s all quite similar to other popular titles in the genre, except for the storyline that progresses through each mission. There are a series of cut-scenes that moves the narrative forward and these are unlocked as you progress.

I felt the only thing that really let the game down is the lag you get when playing. Moving icons around isn’t particularly smooth and it actually feels a little choppy- actually, much like the choppy animation that is staple to Manga. While this is rarely an issue when watching an animated movie/series, this kind of thing in a game isn’t very cool. It doesn’t make the app unplayable, but I just felt it could be smoother and more responsive throughout.

Fun Factor:

If you enjoy this genre of game, this is a fun title that’s sure to give many hours of enjoyment. I don’t think a Manga interest alone is enough to make it worth playing, but an interest in puzzle games is vital.

Addictive:

Yes, highly and the blistering popularity of similar games like Bejeweled can attest to that. The game is very engrossing and you are rewarded by completing missions and viewing cut scenes. Once you’ve completed the game, you can view all the cut scenes one after the other in the contained library.

Graphics:

The graphics are average without being particularly amazing. I think during gameplay when movement is quite sluggish and laggy this visual element is at its worst. The movie element of the game is typical Manga-animated fare and well produced and presented.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

The music is exhilarating and pacey throughout, adding excitement to the gameplay. There are various times when the game vibrates, although this doesn’t serve a huge amount of purpose. Both of these can be turned if required, but they each work quite well with the game.

Should you Download HeadWar? HeadWar is an engaging and challenging game which blends a Manga-style back story with compulsively addictive gameplay. If you like puzzles, definitely check it out. If you like Manga too, even better. If you just like Manga (and not Bejeweled-esque gameplay), perhaps avoid.
