In the U.S. the number of Smart Phones used have nearly tripled according to Red Eye Chicago. So more iPhones, Blackberries, and T-Mobile’s new G1 are on the street. According to statistics, 8% of Americans owned smart phones in July 2007. 22% of Americans owned smart phones in July 2008.
The trend for smart phones these days offer desktop-like experiences full with high speed Internet, email, keyboard, mobile applications, music, video, digital camera and more. The top trend though is the beloved touch screen. We’ve rounded up the top 3:
It’s really up in the air right now who is the definitive number three, but we shall see.
Smart phones were traditionally only used by business professionals, travelers and white colar executives who addictively depended on their email to be readily available. Whereas, the rest of the cell phone population weren’t so attached. With the new capabilities of today’s smart phones, better technology, cheaper prices, and a bit of sexy appeal, you find more hipsters with them. We’ll revisit this to see where the projected total of smart phones will be in a decade… (if we even have them, maybe we’ll be able to communicate by telekinesis by then
).

yeah, i think the iphone started the trend, nowadays if it doesnt have a touch screen people aren’t interested
No, the Iphone did not start the trend. it was the LG Prada. try to get your facts straight before putting it out there =). Oh, btw, The G1, Htc dream is the top selling phone in the world. sold more than the iphone. and it is much better. btw its not called the G phone. people try to compete it with the Iphone. so lets not call it the G phone cuz that makes the G1 look like a wannabe,,
@akkidd5
We encourage your debate and ask for you to present definitive facts as well. (Please aslo keep in mind this article was a spin-off of the article the Red Eye Chicago paraphrased from the Associated Press… and written 12/4/2008). At that point, those facts were accurate.
Whether the LG Prada started the trend 1st or not, it has been over shadowed by the iconic Apple iPhone… beating everyone to the punch!
We are interested in your facts proving the G1 being the #1 top selling phone in the world. (as we’ve been hearing chatter through the news wires that Android phones… not the G1 will surpass the iPhone sales in 2012).
Lastly, the G1, HTC Dream, Android Developer Phone, ADP1… whatever… has unofficially taken on the nickname “G Phone” and has been consistently stacked against the iPhone. Just a reality. Don’t get us wrong, we love this phone and OS (hence we started a niche website around it).
Looking forward to your response
Since I have a G1 mobile phone app on the market (RecallCheck), of course I’m interested in how well smartphones are doing. Before launch my partner and I took a careful look at the available data (much of which you can see on my blog).
Nothing I’ve seen indicates that the G1, although sales are brisk, outpaced the iPhone. That said I have seen research that indicates Linux based smartphones will outpace iPhones eventually. I expect that to be the case (but I’m biased). And in any case, I’m open to being corrected — just point me to the data.
Just FYI the Red Eye Chicago link doesn’t seem to work (my apologies if it’s me).
