Hands On with Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini and Mini Pro

Hand-ons review of Sony Ericsson X10 Mini & Mini Pro.

We wouldn’t normally combine two phones in one Hands On review, however beyond the Pro having a keyboard and being very slightly bigger, these two phones are exactly the same.

General

  • 2G Network – GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
  • 3G Network – HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
  • Announced – February 2010
  • Released – May 2010 for the Mini / June 2010 for the Mini Pro

The first thing  I did was to make few calls and I found that despite the tiny size I did not have to move the phone from my ear to my mouth to have a successful conversation.  The sound quality was clear both ways.  The speaker phone got crackly if I turned it up to it’s highest volume, but I found that if I turned it one click lower I could still hear fine.

What did bother me was typing, even with the Pro’s keyboard.  Because it has such a tiny screen, the Mini only offers the old-school option of T9 number pad typing, like when you had your Razor.  The keyboard on the Pro isn’t much better.  The keyboard is in even lines, not offset like a normal keyboard and the Shift key’s strange position makes it hard to get used to.  I do like that they keys were raised and spaced, and there is enough travel to the keys so you know you hit a button, but it is about as small as you would assume it would be.

Besides the keyboard, the physical keys on the phones are different as well.  On the Mini the camera button and the volume rocker are fairly close together, making it so I hit the camera button when I wanted to change the volume and visa-versa.  On the Mini Pro, they are slightly farther apart and larger.  What I really didn’t like though is the USB port on the Mini Pro does not have a cover while the Mini’s does.  The last thing I want to do at the end of the day is find tweezers to pick lint out of my phone’s port so I can charge it.

Size

  • Dimensions - 83 mm x 50 mm x 16 mm (3.27″ x 1.97″ x 0.63″) for the Mini / 90 mm x 52 mm x 17 mm (3.54″ x 2.05″ x 0.67″) for the Mini Pro
  • Weight – 88g (3.10 oz) for the Mini / 120 g (4.23 oz) for the Mini Pro

These phones are small!  When I first took these out of their boxes I laughed.  No, I full out guffawed!  How could phones so small do anything exciting?  They have to be made just so you can have a cute, tiny phone.  Well, I was wrong.  I was honestly pleasantly surprised.  Despite how small these phones are they were comfortable to hold and didn’t feel like they would immediately break if I sneezed too hard!

Display

  • Type – TFT-LCD Capacitive Touch Screen / 16 million colors (65K effective)
  • Size – 240 x 320 pixels / 2.55″
  • Features – QWERTY Keyboard (for the Mini Pro) / Scratch-resistant surface / Accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate / Timescape UI

The screens are gorgeous.  Despite their 2.55″ size, these phones put out some very pretty pictures.  I watched a YouTube video and was stunned.  I didn’t even feel like I had to strain to see the video the picture was so clear.  The text from emails and Facebook updates was sharp and easy to read.  I was surprised to find that on pictures and web pages there was no multi-touch capability.  I had to constantly touch somewhere there wasn’t a link to get the little +/- to show up.

Sound

  • Alert Types – Vibration / MP3 ringtones
  • Speakerphone – Yes
  • Headphones – 3.5 mm audio jack

The music I played was clear and got loud enough that I could hear it easily over everyday background noise.  The fact that I could use my favorite headset with it, and not something proprietary from Sony, is a great feature as well.

Memory

  • Phonebook – Practically unlimited entries and fields / Photocall
  • Call records – Practically unlimited
  • Internal – 128 MB
  • Card Slot – MicroSD up to 16 GB / 2 GB included

I have over 1,000 contacts so I’m always worried that phones won’t be able to store all my data.  These little babies had no problems.  The internal memory of 128 MB would cause problems, however.  Since this phone doesn’t look like it’s going to see Android 2.2 (Froyo) all of your apps must be stored on the phones internal memory.  128MB isn’t a lot and would fill up fast.  With 16 GB of external memory, though, you don’t have to worry about running out of space for your pictures of that party you went to last week.

Data

  • GPRS – Class 10 (4+1/3+2 slots) / 32 – 48 Kbps
  • EDGE – Class 10 / 236.8 Kbps
  • 3G – HSDPA / HSUPA
  • WLAN – 802.11 b/g
  • Bluetooth – v 2.1 with A2DP
  • Infrared Port – No
  • USB – 2.0 microUSB

What more could you want?  Sure it would be nice to have Wireless-N, but 90% of the places you’re going to use the wireless network doesn’t have N anyway.  Bluetooth syncing was a cinch and mounting the phone to my computer via USB was easy as pie.

Camera

  • Primary – 5MP / 2560 x 1920 pixels / Autofocus / LED Flash
  • Features – Geo-tagging
  • Video – VGA @ 30 FPS / Video light
  • Secondary – No

Now as far as the pictures from the camera, they aren’t the best.  They felt a little dark, but you’re buying a Sony Ericsson not a Sony Cybershot.  With sufficient light, the pictures do come out relatively well as does the video.  With the Geo-tagging feature of the camera you also know where you took the picture so no wondering where that blurry group of faces was shot at.

Features

  • OS – Android 1.6 (2.1 promised for Q3 2010)
  • CPU – Qualcomm MSM7227 600 MHz
  • Messaging – SMS (threaded view) / MMS / Email / Push Email / IM
  • Browser – HTML
  • Radio – Stereo FM radio with RDS
  • Games – Yes
  • Colors – Red, Black, and Pink on both / Gold, Pearl White, Lime, and Silver also on Mini
  • GPS – A-GPS support
  • Java – Required 3rd party application
  • Included software – Video player (MP4 / H.263 / H.264 / WMV) / Music player (MP3 / eAAC+ / WMA / WAV) / TrackID music recognition / Digital compass / Google Search / Google Maps / Google Gmail / YouTube / Google Calendar / Google Talk / Document viewer / Voice memo / T9 / Google Voice Search (market dependent)

Yes, they only come with Dear Old Donut (1.6).  However, Sony Ericsson has promised 2.1 by the end of the 3rd Quarter (meaning by the end of September) so you wouldn’t have to hold out forever to get some Eclair.  With the 600 MHz Qualcomm processor I don’t see these phones ever meeting with Froyo, however.

I love the FM radio.  I think every phone should have an FM radio.  Sure you can load your MP3s in and download 1,000 apps that play radio stations, but sometimes I just want to hear my local stuff and these phones let you do that.

The Mini comes in 8 colors!  Let me rephrase that.  The Mini comes WITH 8 colors.  You can change the back of the phone out with the plates that come with it.  These plates, however, do not in any way fit on the Mini Pro.  The color you leave the store with is the color you got.

It does come pre-loaded with a ton of software.  This is good as there’s a lot of functionality out of the box, however, this is bad because if you find something you like better, you can’t delete the app that came with the phone.  With only 128 MB of space to work with, this can be an issue.

Battery

  • Standard Battery – Li-Po 930 mAh
  • Stand-By – Up to 285 hours (2G) / Up to 360 hours (3G)
  • Talk-Time – Up to 4 hours (2G) / Up to 3 1/2 hours (3G)

I always takes the Stand-By and Talk-Time numbers with a very large grain of salt.  These numbers are under the best circumstances with no programs at all running in the background and a strong stable signal while talking.  These are not numbers you’re going to see in the real world.  This doesn’t apply just to the Mini and Mini Pro.  This applies to everything that has a battery in it; laptops, cameras, other cellphones, etc.  That being said, these batteries do last quite a while.  I didn’t see 15 days worth of battery, but certainly you can make it through a day without having to charge.

Should You Buy It?

I think Sony Ericsson had a great idea here.  With more and more 3.5″+ screens coming out there is no where for a consumer to turn to just get something small.  The Xperia X10 Mini and Mini Pro fills that gap.  They are Android powered smartphones that you can fit in the tiniest bag or pocket.  I don’t think any power-users or business people would consider this phone, but for those of you out there who want something to play music, check social apps, send texts, and of course make calls that runs on Android, this is going to be a great phone.

I bought the x10 mini. I like the phone but for anyone who’s thinking of getting one should know that the camera and video recorder doen’t have a zoom function while taking pictures but you are able to zoom in after you’ve taken the picture. As of yet I haven’t found an app that will allow me to zoom in before taking a picture.

The second thing is the battery life isn’t very long or at least not as long as advertised even after decreasing screen brightness.

I have brought a X10 mini. The phone is was good for one month and I started getting problems like it gets switched off if I change the panel and wouldn’t start up. I have taken to the service center and they fixed it. The same problem continues even now and the service center people replaced my handset’s motherboard. But still lot of problems persists like the brightness increases to full when unlocking the phone and then it gradually decreases. The SD card gets disconnected every other day automatically. I have put in 8GB card. Again I have given it to the service center. I will give it a minus 8 out of 10.

I’ve had the x10 mini for about 4 months and i’ve had nothing but problems. In the first month I had 3 new phones as after switching itsself off, they refused to switch back on (even after a force reset) The one I have now (the 3rd one) still has its problems. It turns off when you go to answer a call, Im forever having to reinsert the memory card after it decides to eject it and it keeps locking my sim, so Im forever putting my pin in. these are just the problems that annoy me most there are others.
Has anyone else had these or worse problems?

    Xperia: a BAD BAD experience.

I bought a Xperia X10 mini pro last week and I am very disappointed with the product.

Android is not so smart (just like the team that has designed this phone).

To start with there is no voice recorder. I was told to download it from the Android market but when I tried, I got a message “This site is under construction”.

When you try to switch on the camera, you will inadvertently push the keyboard out. Also during video recording, there is no pause function. So if you want to take several clips of the same project, you have to join all the clips later.

The calendar is also very poor. The event reminder tone is too short and dim. You hardly notice it when you are in a crowded place and you can not change it.

Alarm is OK but when the phone is switched off, it does not go off. What’s more when you switch on the phone, you don’t get any notification of a missed alarm.

The PC companion suit is of no use. You can neither edit the contacts/calendar nor can you send SMSs from it.

The radio is the worst I have seen on any phone.

The headphone supplied is of very poor quality.

Hi, I have had the X10 mini Pro for a couple of months now. The main problem I had was that My sim card failed, it was an old card, so not sure if it was the fone that caused it, I got a new card and so far its working fine.

I have noticed there is no Zoom on the camera, which I thought strange, especially coming from Sony.
My last 5 fones have been sony ericsson, all have had built in radio, but you have to have the headfones attached to use it, I can’t be bothered untangling them everytime I want to listen to the radio, so I just listen to the MP3′s, so the radio to me is pointless
The strangest problem I have found is that if I change the Text message “ringtone” from the default, I cannot stop it, if I get a text message the ringtone will play to its finish, even if its a song, it will play the full length of the song, even if I read the text immediately. Extremely embarrassing pretty much always, but especially when your in, say, a cinema and have forgotten to put it on silent. I had to switch the fone off to get it to stop.

Another problem I found was battery consumption, if you leave an app running, it gobbles the battery, especially GPS, bluetooth, and G3. Not all app have a “do you wish to quit this app” function, so you are not always sure they have stopped running. There is no warning from the fone that battery is low, it just goes off. You can download an app that kills all running apps, but I havnt done that yet.

The fone lock isn’t ideal, to unlock you have to press the left hand button twice, something that can easily be done when it’s in your pocket. and I have foned numerous people this way. which also kills the battery.

yes it has some problems as with all technical items i play with lol
But I have a problem that is pissing me off …
when someone phones me – i can be mid way talking talking to them and then it all goes dead silent.
The other end goes silent too and then just cuts them off.
I need to turn phone off and then on again before it comes good.

I got my Mini Pro about 5 weeks ago. It’s my first Sony Ericsson phone – have always had Nokias before. While I love the size and the combo of touchscreen and keypad, these are my issues:

    1. There are only two sound profiles – silent and not silent. I downloaded an app to create more profiles but after activating a profile that uses a ringtone other than the default, it will stay on that ringtone (even after returning to the ‘general’ profile’) until I change it manually.
    2. The alarm does not go off if the phone is switched off – lame.
    3. My main problem is that a few days ago the touch screen just stopped working. I could only select random items very erratically and could not answer calls or read messages. A guy from SE suggested I download Android 2.2, which appeared to fix the problem, except that now sometimes items will be selected on the screen without my touching it. I’ll open the ‘settings’ menu and it will just select an option of its own accord and even when I press the back key it will keep going back to that menu item. Sometimes it will randomly open the music player and start playing a song.
    Has anyone had this problem??

I can’t set a separate alert tone for the calendar – it just uses the default notification ringtone – the same one that arriving emails and other system events use. So when I hear the default tone, I can’t tell whether it’s appointment or something that does not need immediate attention. This defeats the purpose of having notification tones – the phone is just a noisy toy in this respect. I need a useful tool.

Try a force reset. Hold down the menu key while switching the phone on (I have the x10 mini, not the pro but I cant see why it shouldnt work) I’ve had to reset mine many times.
      Hope this works for you

I did what you suggest but the phone didn’t open the battery had been strained and the Sony Erickson PC Companion (it is a rubbish software) does not recognize my devise so I found a sony erickson expert so he manage to connect the phone with his laptop (he told me that has the pro software and the device has finally recognised) and he update from Android 1.6 to Android 2.1 so the phone battery start charging and the phone open after 15minutes
I think the Android 2.1 solves the problems!!!

I’m using X10 mini. No pro, no keyboard, no space wasted.
It was intended to be a 2-month bridge until X8 comes in stores, but now i just love it.
First of all: i’m using the freeware MyPhoneExplorer to sync with my notebook. It allows to sync with outlook and has other features like saving sms to harddisk which come in handy. For what I like most: I dont have to sync my friends phonenumbers and my private calendar via some server.

hardware: If i had encountered the same probs with sd and simcards being not recognized i maybe wouldnt stick to it. I also deliberately chose not to have the keyboard, for its the best way to crack a phone in 2 bits… and even if T9 is oldschool, its faster than looking ages for key combos. Additionally, i can be as clumsy as i like. The phone is no sissy when it comes to falling on the ground hitting walls (some people just tend to run into doors..) and stuff
software: since 2.1, the world shines muuuuch brighter! the batterylife is longer, it has less issues with slow responding touch screen and more features. Tough, sometimes, the phones reacts slowly to tapping on the screen which its driving me nuts from time to time. And when the phone is just rebooted, it generally does this. This is why i try to take turning off to a minimum.
But what is vital to me: the phone can just be used. Its a great phone, good for sending sms, the cam takes pictures and snapshots in good quality, it replaced my ipod (there a plenty good player-apps on the market) and has some very nice gadgets. Furthermore, it fits into a normal jeanspocket and leaves space. Yay

I got a sony ericsson xperia x10 mini pro for christmas and i have had problems, my last sony ericcsson, the w350i was an exellent phone but this one is not so good. First of all, i am not subscribed to anything, all i downloaded was things from the android market for free and mxit which is for free but every time i look at my airtime, i see money has been taken off and i havent even been doing anything, over night about R10 comes off. Also i charge the battery over night, sometimes for 2 whole days and it only lasts for about half a day and it goes to one bar. There are other small details but im not too woried about those but the airtime that i am losing is very worrying, especially since I am 13 and only get R70 every month on my contract

      Hi Savannah,

You should check the apps you’re downloading to ensure they are not running in the background, such as a Facebook or Twitter app periodically checking for new updates. Many apps allow you to control how often they update. Or you can turn off background data syncing for all apps in the Settings menu > Accounts & Sync menu of your phone.
