Google’s “Bouncer” scans Android Market for Malware

Google, today, revealed their service code-named Bouncer, which analyzing uploaded Android apps for known malware, spyware and trojans. The service uses their cloud infrastructure and simulates how an app would run on a device, if an app is flagged it goes for further manual inspection. It also looks for bad and misleading behaviors, additionally, analyzing new developer accounts in order to thwart repeat malware offenders.
VP of Engineering for Android, Hiroshi Lockheimer, goes on to state they have been testing the service “for a while now,” and see significant reduction, 40 percent since the second half of 2011, in potential malicious apps uploaded into Google’s Android Market. Google unlike Apple, Microsoft or even our own AndroidTapp app store, does not screen each app prior to being uploaded to their store. Which invites those mal-intent folks that create software to take advantage of those unsuspecting. With recent security scares and recants it’s good to see Google being proactive about keeping Android and the consumers who use it safe.
