I got a long rambling message from a guy who thought he was calling his mom. He was feeling crappy about forgetting his twin brother’s birthday and was getting some thoughts off what appeared to be his wine infused chest.

I received a call one morning about 3 A.M. from a home security office informing me that my house was being robbed and that the police had been called to respond. I don’t have a home security system! I called the number and told them they had called the wrong home. The woman read back the number they had on file and it was my cell phone! I asked her where I supposedly lived and she actually gave me the address. (Some security!) I called 911 and told them about the call I received and they responded to the break in at the correct person’s home.

I once got a number of calls from my Daughter at college asking desperately for funds so she could make it through the month. Only trouble is that I’m not married, and have no kids. Turns out that there is another man in the area with the same first and last names and even the same middle initial!! She must have called 411 and gave the area and picked me from the list. Once I was finally able to get in touch with the young lady, it became clear I wasn’t her Dad – who was some 15 years older than me.

There was a period for a few weeks, about 10-12 years ago, where I was receiving voicemails from Discover or their collection affiliates. I was in college, so getting out of a class and listening to these voicemails was very unnerving. Apparently I hadn’t paid my account in months with very large balances, and they were going to start collecting it.

After a few weeks of some of these calls, we finally figured out what happened. Someone in Ohio (I’m in California) had opened up a credit card under my name and address, with my brother’s social and his birthdate, and my phone number. Not sure how that happened. But, yeah, some of those voicemails were very unnerving since I never had any bad debt.
