Geared is a clever and imaginative logic game for Android. The premise is really simple; attach cogs together to make the blue cog move. Incredibly simple in concept, but fiendishly challenging as the levels get progressively trickier. If you enjoyed the recently reviewed Apparatus, but perhaps need something a little less overwhelming… Geared is a massively addictive puzzler that will keep you occupied for hours.

Features:
Geared is actually a game I came across some time ago and found myself fully immersed in it for a number of days. The idea of the game is to connect the moving yellow cog to the stationary blue cog; just pretend you are a clockwork engineer of some kind. You have a set of free cogs to use which are of varying size and color. Using your finger you move these new cogs into place, hopefully making the blue cog move.
Gameplay starts simply as the game warms you up and introduces new issues to overcome, such as not being able to place a cog in the red sections. However, the level design quickly becomes very challenging indeed- expect some really tough puzzles and often frustrating gameplay. While challenging, the game feels very rewarding and there is something hugely satisfying about completing a level. There are 150 or more of these levels to complete so a bona fide time killer.
I can’t help but recall my review of Apparatus. Both are kind-of engineering based and physics plays a significant role in both. Apparatus, with its prodigious graphics and complex gameplay definitely feels the superior, but I did find it more than a little overwhelming at times. Geared however, although very basic graphically, felt almost a little bit more immersive on the basis you often automatically see the way ahead… it’s just how to make it work.

Fun Factor:
Geared is oodles of fun. While it is really captivating and often challenging, it’s also significantly rewarding enough to want to play it over and over again. 150 levels is a lot to work though, but really enjoyable.
Addictive:
Once you get started it’s difficult to put down. The increments in difficulty are incredibly slight, so it draws you in and continues to challenge you throughout. Puzzles never get so complex that you feel overwhelmed, so definitely a title that has highly addictive gameplay throughout.
Graphics:
I think us Android users are starting to have higher and higher expectations graphically and, while the hand-drawn design of Geared is pretty cool, some players might expect a little more. The simple graphics in no way detract from gameplay- far from it- but some players might demand a little more detail on their high end devices. I think I’m perhaps being a little mean. Geared is still a superb game and very well designed, but the graphics are relatively basic compared with many titles hitting the Market recently.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
There are cute popping sound when you pick up a cog, and a dropping sound when you place one. Then there’s a ‘tring’ noise when you complete the level. Pretty simple really but works well with the simple design.
