Further Beyond Fighting is an excellent hand to hand combat game in the style of Mortal Kombat and Tekken. Further Beyond Fighting uses a unique fighting system where fighters move slower as they take more damage in battle and show bruises and scarring during the fight.
There are four characters to choose from at the beginning of the game: Minami, Lucy, Sanjib, and Ryota. As you play through the game in arcade mode you unlock another group of 4 playable characters.
There are two rounds of fighting in each fight, with a possible third round tiebreaker. As far as I could determine from testing this game there is no possibility of a double knockout.
The game has exquisite graphics. This is not an application that will work on a lower end phone. Even my HTC Thunderbolt had issues rendering the graphics smoothly at times because of the complexity and detail of the animations.
As you battle other characters and your character takes damage you will notice that his body begins to bruise and his reaction time will slow. This is an interesting new fighting feature, that as far as I know, it is unique to Further Beyond Fighting.
Further Beyond Fighting has four different fighting modes: Arcade, VS, Survival, and Sparring. Arcade mode allows you to play through the game in order to unlock new characters and the special unlockable zombie setting. The zombie play mode allows you to turn any playable character into the zombie version of that character for a battle. Versus mode allows you to choose a specific opponent you wish to practice fighting against. You choose your fighter and then engage him in a true practice round where the opponent hits back. Sparring mode is different from Versus mode because the opponent does not hit back. Instead as you hit your opponent his health will regenerate. This forces you to practice combo moves to make the opponent’s life drain faster. Sparring mode also gives you the ability to play with instructions on. Teaching you how to perform various attacks and combos. Finally, Survival mode pits you against all of the other characters in do or die combat. You fight each character in turn and retain your health from previous battles in to your next fight. This mode also has an online ranking system to compare your fighting skills to others.

Further Beyond Fighting is a very enjoyable game, it plays in the same style as the legendary hits Mortal Kombat and Tekken. A few key advantages to this game are its Zombie Unlock, the unique feature of real time effects occurring from taking damage during a fight, and it’s incredible graphics for the Android platform.
The fundamental game mechanics and graphics are excellent and the game offers a very enjoyable and high quality gaming experience for those of us with Android phones.
The one feature which detracts from the fun factor of this game are the controls. The thumb stick for the game is too small and does not always track movement commands properly. I also find that the game has occasional problems with its multi-touch aspects. It did not always seem to recognize multiple button or movement presses during the same period of time. I think the game would benefit from a larger thumb stick, or at the very least one that extended farther out from it’s point of origin. It could also use a touch up on it’s multi-touch compatibility.
Further Beyond Fighting is created to give you opportunities to always improve your game. They have incorporated a Zombie Mode as well as a Survival Mode with an online ranking system. I like games like this with unlockable content, because it dramatically increases the addictiveness of the game. Unlockable characters are awesome because most times they have more powerful moves then your basic characters. Further Beyond Fighting doesn’t just stop with unlockable characters though. It also has a Zombie Mode unlock! This allows you to play as the zombie version of every character in the game. Lets be honest with ourselves, who wouldn’t want to play as a zombie ninja badass?
Finally, Further Beyond Fighting’s Survival mode contributes to it’s addictiveness by allowing you to compare yourself to other players.
The biggest detractors from the addictiveness of this game is it’s lack of online multi-player and the difficulty of using the controls. Everyone’s favorite feature of Mortal Kombat and Tekken is being able to beat the crap out of your friends in virtual hand to hand combat. A game just isn’t as fun or addictive, if instead of personally getting to take down my friends in a fight to the death I have to just compare our high scores.
The controls also need work as previously stated. I could not become addicted to this game on my Thunderbolt until it was easier to play.
The graphics for this game are excellent. They are unquestionably some of the best graphic sequences on Android. I have not seen any other fighting games like it for Android and I doubt I will see any like it in the near future. The game is absolutely gorgeous.
It even displays well on both the Galaxy Tablet and the Xoom. There is absolutely no loss in quality whatsoever. Unfortunately the control pad does not work properly on tablets so this game is definitely a no-go if your only Android device is a tablet.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
This game makes perfect use of both vibration and sound. The soundtrack is excellent it is perfect for a hand to hand combat game. They even have the fight announcers voice saying “Ready… Fight!!” Each character has a unique voice over while going in to combat. The sound and music for this game really make you feel like you are playing the game in an arcade. This creates a really fun gaming experience.
Further Beyond Fighting also takes advantage of the phone’s vibration to create a rumble pad effect. This unique feature also adds to the arcade like feel of the game. Overall sound and vibration add a lot to the gaming experience.
