Frontline Commando is a macho military romp through some war-torn middle-eastern hell hole. You are a seriously gung-ho Commando who would appear to have anger management issues. Annoyed at not only failing to wipe a dictator the first time round, the guy went and killed your buddies. Time for revenge. This third-person shooter is high on adrenaline, testosterone and ammo, boasting impressive graphics and sound, plenty of levels and several hundred baddies to wipe out.
Price: Free, plus optional in-game purchases
Tested on: HTC Desire HD
Content Rating: High Maturity
Pros & Cons:
Pros
- Awesome 3D graphics!
- Frenetic and exciting gameplay!
- Pulsating music and sound!
- Plenty of missions and objectives!
- Veritable arsenal of weapons!
Cons
- Lots of subtle prompts to invest real money in the game to buy weapons, etc.
- Gameplay is pretty one dimensional- just aim and fire.
Features:
Frontline Commando places you deep in enemy territory after losing your colleagues during an unfruitful assassination attempt of a evil dictator. “Hell-bent” on revenge you have multiple enemies to kill, limited weaponry and a whole lot of anger. Controls consist of a fire button, a switch weapon button, a button to refill your ammo, a button to enter target mode (long range or sniper style), a button to duck and two tabs to move along your line of defense. You can also consume a medikit and call for air support if you need it (and you will).
It’s a thoroughly action packed affair of dodging enemy gunfire, carefully aiming and taking out as many baddies as possible. The music keep things feeling constantly pressured, and there’s usually some relief when you complete a level. I thought the gamaplay was quite difficult too, it’s certainly not a stroll in the park- you need to be quick, accurate and ruthless. You need to know which enemies pose the most threat and take them down first. Head shots are obviously rewarded, but enemies move about quite a lot so it’s not always straight forward.
Watch Mobile
There is a neat assortment of weapons to collect and use, including; sniper rifles, shotguns, assault rifles and rocket launchers. I did find that the game often encourages you to buy things- or says you ‘need’ to buy certain items when you just don’t have enough credit to do so. This, in turn, prompts offers to buy using real-life cash (hence why the game is free). Unfortunately this occurs quite early in the game before you’ve really gotten into it- so you don’t feel particularly inclined to do so.
There are plenty of missions to go through and without a doubt it is a brilliantly developed game. However, for me at least, it lacked diversity and I didn’t think it was particularly addictive. For a short burst of irrepressible machismo this is loads of fun, but I’m unsure if it’s something you’ll play over and over.

Fun Factor:
For a short while it’s definitely fun. After a few levels, however, you realise that being behind enemy lines and also massively under equipped is not as much fun. If you’re willing to dip into your own pocket and buy in-game credits it might be better, and it will be essential if you want to make any progress in the game.
Addictive:
Personally I didn’t find it that addictive at all. It was more of a chore to play for any conceivable length of time. It’s initially fun, but this wanes when you progress and find yourself without the right weapons for the job.
Graphics:
The graphics are absolutely first rate. You can’t quite see the whites of an enemies eyes, but it’s not far off. Highly detailed and with lots of cool features- like the way environment gets altered by gunfire, etc.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
The sound is top notch. Pulsating music and realistic battle sounds. The game is developed by Glu Mobile so you’d expect nothing less.
