AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Features:

FreshFace Android App brings home screen customization and personalization traits from aHome to new T-mobile myTouch 3G owners and existing Android fans as well. The Android App offers up to five screens vs. three screens the default home screen app gives you. The app includes an administration to pick from pre-designed themes with icons, or you can create your own theme mashup (some themes can be purchased separately).

In addition to the stock widgets included within the app, search through the repository for even more Android widgets.  Widgets included are: aCalendar, aMusic, Analog Clock, Analog World Clock, aPhotoFrame, Digital World Clock, ESPN, Quick Note, Quick Tweet, RSS Reader (Add AndroidTapp.com Feed), Search, Showtimes, Stocks, and Weather.  I really like the Quick Tweet widget, allows you to quickly send a Tweet to your Twitter account from your home screen.

Gripe Alert: I have noticed that running FreshFace on the T-Mobile G1 is sluggish, and doesn’t seem to run 3rd party Android widgets (such as Beautiful Widgets).  Unsure if the rationale is because its running on the G1 as this app is intended for the new T-Mobile myTouch 3G… but still should be speedy on my Android device.

Usefulness:

Gives Android phone owners another cool app to customize and personalize their Android devices, with virtually endless possibilities.

Ease of Use:

Using that app is not difficult, spend some time in the administration to tweak your theme to your liking.

Frequently Used:

If FreshFace is your default home screen app, then you would be using it every time you tapped the “Home” button on your Android phone.

Interface:

This app is all about interface…  Empowering you to configure the interface how you please.

This application has been known to crash and freeze phones requiring you to do a factory reset. I had to do it twice. do not download this.

Todd, you have no idea what Jacob has or hasn’t done. You obviously are a troll.

Jacob, I’m with you on that. I’ve tried FreshFace 3 separate times after factory resets and app updates and it works fine for about 2 hours and then everything on my phone starts freezing and prompting me to force close.

I love the app and it has great functionality, just don’t know why like 10% of myTouches seem to freeze constantly. (And super sad, I’m in this percentage.)

Im definitely with the both of you, Jacob and Yun I have a G1 and downloaded it, absolutely correct it worked for tbe first two hours and then started freezing and force close kept displaying. My boyfriend actually has the mytouch, i told him to download it. He texted me within 10 min of downloading it and stated it kept freezing his phone. Wonderful app if it would work.

I would love this app if it didn’t slow down my phone so much, I uninstalled it and re-installed it a couple weeks later hoping it would be better..but no. It didn’t make my MyTouch crash though.

I installed FresfFace on my Rogers Canada HTC Magic, and I’ve had NO problems. It’s very quick, very slick, and now I am happy to have more than 3 screens for icons. I’ve been running it for 4 days now, and no force closes, no problems with any apps.

The ONLY bug I’ve encountered so far is that I can not rename folders. Usually when you create a new folder on the “desktop” you can rename it by long-pressing on the title bar of the folder, but this does not work.

Other than that, works fine for me. I give it 4 out of 5 stars for now. If something changes, I’ll let you know.

I have this installed on the MyTouch 3G for about two weeks now. One of the first apps I installed. I find the app Force closes a lot and often runs slow to start up. Also if power drops below 65 you find the app to run very slow. I have used this solely with no other apps running in the background and still get Force closes.

The potential for this app is very good however they need to fix bugs in the program as not as fast when compared to the default one.

    It’s all about speed.

ive tried installing this app and i like the way i can have 5 screen instead of 3, the only problem is when i hit the home button it like cancels the app and takes me back to my original 3 screens and the icons and widgets in their original places, how do i get facefresh to stay my background when i hit home?

@codylala To get FreshFace as your default Home screen you must remove the normal Android home screen from the Settings Menu.

Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Application > (find the Home app and select) > tapp Clear Defaults

I too love this app a lot. The default MyTouch should have the functionalities of FreshFace. With that said, I too have experience really bad performance issues where the phone just seems sluggish, and at times non-responsive. I’d hate to give up using the app, but I need my phone! I’m going to give it a try one more time, before uninstalling it.

Please come out with a patch/update to resolve the issues! I love the features, I hate the drawbacks.

i installed this app on my g1 and it worked perfectly fine for a whole weekend. i got the new update (1.6) and after my phone rebooted fresh face kept force closing and i could not get to my settings menu. i had to do a factory reset on my phone. i have not gotten the nerve to try it again because i don’t want to go through another factory reset.

I’ce had FreshFace for about a month, it’s better than all the other home apps in that it’s faster, force closes less, and has cooler functinality, IMO. But when I installed the software update from TMo (Donut, I presume), it got stuck in a force-close loop and now will not work. I already downloaded the updated version, so I don’t understand why.

hey windy, not sure if you figured it out or maybe someone else can learn from this. if your ff is in a force close loop, do a safe mode boot up (turn off phone, and as you are turning it back on, hold the menu buttom until your main screen comes up. you will see a “safe mode” on the bottem left.)

once in safe mode, remove ff. once removed, turn the phone off and boot up as normal.

after that, it’s up to you if you want to dl the program again. I did and for the most part it works however it does has bugs in it still.

have had the force close probs before but decided to give it one more chance. So i cleared a bunch of caches like browser mainly and installed taskiller and haven’t had it force close on me yet been going one day with normal use.
    See how long it lasts.

Fresh face is an awesome home replacement, but like most everyone else, slow downs and force close. Force closes consistently when using another ui-intensive app (like RoboDefense) and a call comes through. Like another poster said, love this app, but need my phone.

I can totally side with anyone who claims this application crashes phones. I installed the app right after I purchased my MyTouch and it worked fine for a couple months. All of a sudden, it decided to crash and I had to take it in for a complete factory reset. It’s a great app. In fact, I checked back here to see if the bug has been fixed so I can re-install it. Apparently it hasn’t… save yourself the trouble, don’t download FreshFace until the problem’s been taken care of.
