AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • 4-in-1 virtual keyboard inputs; accuracy of Dragon Dictation speech, Trace, Write and Tap

Cons

  • I personally found the handwritten input a bit cumbersome.

Features:

Flex T9 is a virtual 4-in-1 keyboard by Nuance, the makers of Dragon Dictation voice to text software. Previously you would only get Nuance Dragon Dictation or Voice Control actions preloaded from OEMs on devices such as myTouch 4G, now they are offering this technology in the Android Market for general public to purchase. With the keyboard you get:

  • The accuracy of Dragon Dictation speech to text engine
  • Trace which is like popular swipe texting apps like Swype, SlideIt, or ShapeWriter
  • Write letters for handwriting recognition
  • Traditional Tap to typing text

Speak

You may notice my repeated references to Dragon Dictation, that’s until you experience first hand how awesome and accurate the speech to text engine is. It is far more accurate than Google’s own built-in voice to speech for Android phones. At a dinner with leading industry bloggers a while back we performed a side by side accuracy comparison of Google’s Voice to Text on Android against Nuance’s Dragon Dictation on iPhone and the latter was triumphant 99% to 97% accurate every time.

To use it, simply tap the Dragon Dictation Speak icon located in the bottom left row, speak your text and either “Tap screen to stop recording” or stop talking. To correct a word, simply double-tap it to invoke more words in the library and choose or re-type.

Trace

In my opinion, and well… tested by the Guinness Book of World Records, swiping input on virtual keyboards are the fastest and most accurate typing inputs so far. They require a slight learning curve but once learned yield convenient benefits. FlexT9 Speak-Trace-Write-Tap incorporates this and those a decent job of it. However I tend to compare every similar input to Swype, whom crowned that world’s fastest title.

Write

I personally don’t care for this input method however it could be very useful for Android tablet owners with stylus inputs who prefer that method with more screen real estate. You can write your characters as a word, left-to-right, or on top of each other, which can be essential if the writing area is too small.

Tap

Of course if all those methods are not sufficient for you can can still tap and text as with any virtual keyboard. Tip: longpress a letter then slide up to enter the special character above it.

Usefulness:

FlexT9 Speak-Trace-Write-Tap excels in its versatile and convenient input methods, which are literally one button click to switch between.

Android Advice™ – How do I change my virtual keyboard?

  1. Open Settings » Language & keyboard » Select FlexT9 Speak-Trace-Write-Tap.
  2. Press “OK” to access permissions after you’ve read them.
  3. Long press on any text box » Click Input Method » Select FlexT9 Speak-Trace-Write-Tap.

Frequently Used:

Once you change your keyboard, it would be used every time you need to type something.

Should you Download FlexT9 Speak-Trace-Write-Tap? Yes! If only for the Dragon Dictation feature alone it’s worth it… but combine that with swipe-to-text and a few more inputs and you’re rockin’!

Just downloaded Nuance’s FlexT9 for my Droid. The app is great and much more accurate than other speech recognition app’s I’ve been using on mobile devices. I really like the flexibility too with the trace and predictive text inputting for when I am in a place where I need to be quiet. It’s my new favorite app.

App stopped working (began displaying a licensing error) after about a week of use. Market shows the app as installed. However, when I un-install from Market it attempts to charge me again to re-install. So, I re-install from a backup and the licensing problem pop-up message continues to occur at each attempted use. Nuance must be using some squirrely licensing system. I have been exchanging email messages with the author, Nuance, for about a week now without success. PITA!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t know if I am very pleased with this app. The auto-correction has been overly agressive. Can’t even use my last name. It substitues someones elses name. Probably ok if you name is Jones.

I wish they put an @ on the keyboard rather than having to go to the number keyboard. The alpha keyboard shows the @ but I cannot figure out how you would put in an email address using swipe. Try it – xxxxx@comcast.net. Good luck.

How do you override the auto-correction. You can turn it off but what if you don’t like the word they suggest.

Finally, why aren’t there backspace keys on these apps. .

Hi aljodo, these tips could hopefully help you.

You can toggle auto-correction by going to Settings » Language & keyboard » FlexT9 Text Input » Preferences » Auto-correction and turn down to “Low” or “Off”

The slightly easier way to put @ symbol from the initial keyboard is to longpress “c” then it will turn into @. You can do this for any letter with characters in the top left corner.

There is a backspace key next to “m” on third row to the right.

      Hope that helps!

I already use dragon on my PC. On my android I would like to use dragon with some “to do” processing software. Are you aware of any “to do ap” that can be addressed with Dragon?
