Fitbit Zip is a wireless activity tracker logging steps, calories burned and distance. Combined with the companion app it can sync to Android and iPhones via Bluetooth automatically and to the cloud. In the growing area of wearable tech- is the Zip suitable for your fitness needs? Find out in this review!
Price: $59.95, $76.99 from MobileFun.co.uk
Pros & Cons:
- Tiny wearable pedometer & fitness tracker!
- Has companion app for wireless sync of data to phone then onto the cloud!
- Really simple to operate functions!
- Periodic issues in syncing data.
- App sync only available to a dozen devices, however, there is computer sync with USB dongle.
The Fitbit Zip is the lower priced activity tracker of the bunch. The portfolio includes another clip-on called the One, a wristband tracker called the Flex and WiFi scale called Aria. The Zip tracks steps, calories, and distance; unlike the two other wearables it does not track sleep habits. Coupled with the Fitbit app you can track food & water intake, but in the current state it’s worth avoiding those feature as it’s more work than convenience. That said, using the gadget as a pedometer is totally accurate and awesome! As it syncs via Bluetooth to the phone and the phone in turn syncs to the cloud for more robust data analysis tools. There are only about a dozen phones supported at the moment but there is a computer sync option as well. Switching through screens on the Zip is super easy. Just tap the screen and it cycles through one of five; smiley face, current time, steps, distance and calories.
The Zip consists of a tracker (battery included), a silicone jacket with clip, tool for unlatching battery cover, and tiny USB dongle for wireless computer sync if you don’t use the mobile app. I would advise setting up immediately as the tracker will omit prior data if you use it without initially setting up as I did. Thereafter it saves 7 full days of data and summarizes up to 23 days of data.
My only fear is that I might lose the quarter sized doohickey or forget it attached to clothing and accidentally wash it. Fitbit’s website states it is rain, splash, and sweat-proof but not water-proof. Past occasional connectivity sync issues it does work automatically and is superb as a pedometer fitness tracker!
It comes in five colors; Blue, Magenta, White, Charcoal and Lime. It can be found at local and online retailers including Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Apple, AT&T, Amazon and more; for around $60 bucks.
