Famigo conducted a survey throughout the month of January 2012, and analyzed information from 1,000 random usage samples from Famigo Sandbox (its free Android app), uncovering a few insights into how families are using mobile media. The company noted that a majority of the usage came from “pass back,” or when a parent or guardian passes the phone or tablet back to the child to play with.
Unsurprisingly, 88% of the apps families downloaded in the survey were free, and were apps in the casual gaming category. Angry Birds (all three flavors currently out), along with Fruit Ninja and Talking Tom Cat 2, made up the top 5 most downloaded games.
Another interesting finding is that the average use time by the child in this situation was just under 12 minutes, with an average of two apps opened in that period. The study also found that for families, phones are much, much more in use, with 94% of the users in this case coming from the smaller screens.
Overall, the survey provided some interesting statistics on how families who share devices with children use those devices, making for a very interesting read. For the full infographic, see below.
