Facebook for Android Update: Places, Groups, and Notifications

Finally, Facebook has introduced some of the most requested features to be added to the Facebook for Android app. Version 1.4 was released earlier today and requires a manual update from the Market.

Facebook for Android Places
Facebook for Android Groups

Places was launched earlier this year onto the iOS app and the mobile touch version of the Facebook site. This is similar to Foursquare and SCVNGR which allows you to check-in to restaurants, movie theathers, stadiums or any other business directly from your phone. Now instead of sharing your 4SQ and SCVNGR posts through their own app, Facebook has integrated their feature directly into the Android version. Also, you can see what Places your friends have checked into as well when viewing it from the app. Another way to stalk your family, friends, and enemies? Absolutely.

Groups is a new addition to the Android app as well. You can now view your groups, it’s members, and post information to the wall easily from your phone. It’s not quite as full-featured as viewing your Groups from the desktop version of Facebook but at least you can share some of the basic functions such as text posts and photos.

Last but not least, the biggest gripe a lot of users had with the Android version of Facebook: notifications. FB has finally made it so when clicking on notifications within the app it will redirect you back to the app rather than the mobile web version. This makes using the app so much easier. Granted, if you click on an external link it will still bring up your browser. However, now you can view posts, comments on your photos, and shared links instantly through the app natively. Bravo Facebook.

How do you feel about the new Facebook features? Will you now use the app instead of the mobile web version (as we all know some of you do)? Post your comments below!

    2 Years, still no ability to create or manage events, or receive push notifications and still holds a gps lock after you exit the app.

    -> force close
    -> uninstall

    Still no chat, can’t “like” comments, no push, Places is a bad sollution on Android.

    Being an Android developer myself I am wondering why this takes so long to implement. Every feature except chat shouldn’t need more time than three days to be implemented and tested…

    Still it’s a huge improvement but still doesn’t fulfill the potential of this app.

      i have a galaxy tab and it is absolute rubbish. when i am attempting to use facebook on it i have to have the tab in one hand and my blackberry in the other. is there no other independant, third party app that works on a tab for facebook? tried opera mini but that was equally useless. none of my notifications show on the home screen

    Having the same issue on the Evo. Even on Wifi groups doesn’t load. I’ll have to try and send this up to the FB devs.

    updates are nice, but what good are all of the updates without notifications that alert the user and not pop up only when the user opens facebook???

    I do not want SMS notifcations nor do I want email notifications. The notifications should alert the user as they are received such as wall posts, comments etc. The only notifications I receive without opening the application are emails…

    Like the application just not the reliability of it.

    Hey guys.. There is a new app in Beta called “Pushee” that brings Facebook Push Notifications to ALL Android Versions. It will also have support for Twitter @’s and DM’s via push notification in the next week. You can get the Beta here. http://pushee.atomicpineapple….

    Yes… I am the developer, and yes this is a shameless plug.. but the fact is that Facebook has been screwing Android users and we are filling the gaps with TRUE Push Notifications.. and not just for chat.

    We will also soon we adding more social media platforms to the app to provide a full push notification service.

    Check it out!
