Exchange by TouchDown syncs emails, contacts, calendar and tasks on your Android device.

Price: Free 5 Day Trial, License $19.99

AndroidTapp.com Android App Review:

First off Exchange by TouchDown is Awesome! This Android App Review is 2 months of evaluation in the making… so here goes.

Our system specs:

  • Migrated from Domino Server to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 with ActiveSync
  • We tested “Exchange by TouchDown Beta” which has Push (be sure your version has Push, otherwise the regular version syncs your emails in 1 hour increments)

Note: Please DO NOT purchase a license until you have verified that it works for your Exchange server!

Features:

Exchange by TouchDown is quite honestly featured packed with most of the mobile email features you would expect when connecting to a Microsoft Exchange server. Exchange by TouchDown features full Email, Calendar, and Contacts capabilities. Gripe Alert: the only feature missing is Tasks or email Search. We asked the developer and Tasks, Notes and Search is on the radar, so stay tuned!

  • Email: Send and Receive email just as if you were using your Outlook desktop client all with ActiveSync Push technology. You can switch to different Folders; Sent, Deleted, Drafts, etc. and manage Read/Unread states. What’s great about the ActiveSync Push technology is any action you perform on the phone is synced with your desktop Outlook client in near real-time. For example, if you open your desktop Outlook client and delete an email on your phone, the email will be deleted on Outlook… and vice-versa. The best example is when you Send an email from the phone and it appears in your “Sent” folder in Outlook. That is the pain of using POP3/IMAP email clients (such as the default Android Email or K9), your desktop or webmail accounts are not in sync.
  • Calendar: Sync your Calendar and view events in 1 Day, Week, Month or Agenda views. Just like your desktop Outlook client, Exchange by TouchDown alerts you of events with Android Notifications. Even cooler, you can Send/Accept Meeting requests via the phone and sync with Outlook.
  • Contacts: Although we didn’t have our own Contacts ported from Domino/Lotus in time for this Android app review. We’re sure they can be synced with Active Directory. As an alternative you can create contacts manually in Outlook as well as on the phone that will sync.

The feature list of Exchange by TouchDown really helps Android users stay connected with their mobile life.

Usefulness:

For business users of Android, this Android app bridges the gap for being able to receive corporate email on a G1 or Android powered phone in real-time.

Ease of Use:

Once you properly configure your connection settings, Exchange by TouchDown is somewhat intuitive to use. Meaning, using the “Menu” button on the G1 opens avenues to switch around to folders and pressing the “Back” button on the phone sends you to the start screen for more features and settings. Note: by default, all of your folders do not appear in the “Folders” list, therefore you must check what Folders you would like to display in the Advanced Setting Menu.

Here’s a link to the configuration help document.

Frequently Used:

Intended for daily use. (WARNING, can officially turn your Android phone into a “CrackDroid”… Android’s equivalent to BlackBerry’s “CrackBerry” nickname)

Interface:

The user interface is optimal for thumb/finger operation.

Should you Download Exchange By TouchDown? Yes! The features and functionality-to-cost ratio justifies the $20 expense.

    Does TouchDown support SSL Authentication?

    • Lauren says:

I’m pretty sure it does if you read below, I also have an SSL encrypted connection and I’m wondering if it’s possible to JUST get my outlook calendar synced and NOT my email-don’t want to deal w/ my work email if I don’t have to, need to be able to get away from it! Let me know if anyone knows if this is possible w/ TouchDown, thanks!

  2. Carlos Santamaria says:

Hello I get error 403 on my Android for ActiveSync Server.

I can change any settings directly on my Exchange Server I have full access, what should I do to set my exchange 2003 in order to make it work.

  3. nitro says:

    Robert,
    yes it supports ssl

    Carlos
403 can happen to a variety of reasons.
IP address blocking on the Microsoft-Server-Activesync v-dir is a common reason. Supplying the wrong domain name, or not having EAS enabled on the server are other causes.

Please dont post support issues here. It is not a support forum and you may no get a response here. write to support directly

    regards

  4. mj says:

How does one write to support?

  5. bill says:

Can you set up it up to “push” only during certain hours like you can on windows mobile.

i only want my emails to notify me from 7 to 5pm each day. i dont want to be bothered after that or get buzzed all night long from my vendors overseas whom are emailing me at 2am. and what a hassle it is to turn of notifications daily if it doesnt.

  6. moro says:

i want to purshase this program for my Nexus phone im not able to find anything except the trial version i need HELP, the program is perfect for me

  7. Micki says:

I’m using trail version (2nd day) and really like so far. A couple of questions …

how can i set so i can see envelope into such as everyone the email was sent to?

can the software also pull non-exchange email such as POP mail (earthlink or verizon)?

    Thanks,

    Micki

    • Nitrodesk says:

When you are reading any email, tap on the header bar and a gray bar will open up under it showing all other parties in the email. Tapping the gray bar will show more details and let you add any of them to your contacts.

  8. piperthedj says:

will ‘touchdown’ support USB connections? or is it strictly OTA? like everything else?
    thanks in advance

  9. Sam Alexander says:

Does Touchdown allow user to send calendar invites to multiple people like we can with Outlook/exchange? Also, if you open a calendar appointment will it allow me to see others who were invited to the same appointment? These are features we use daily.
    Thank you.

  10. Chris says:

I have the trial version and it seems to be working very well. The only thing that I am curious about is in the trial version the advanced settings have the signature line greyed out (“sent from my droid using touchdown…”).

Does anyone know if you can edit that in the full version?

  11. xr3k says:

Will Verizon charge you extra if you were to use this exchange app? I only have the data plan, but not the exchange mail plan thing.

  12. Sofie says:

I downloaded the trial version last night and it was working. This morning it is asking for my PIN and won’t accept the one I input at set-up. To reset PIN it asks for an exchange password – what’s that? How do I get back into my email?

  13. DaveA says:

Is it possible to have multiple Exchange partnerships – so I can have my home e-mail/calendar synching as well as my work (both run Exchange)?

  14. nathan says:

can touchdown do email filtering? i am on several listservs that pump about 40 emails a day to my email box that i would prefer to not come to my phone. the blackberry server allows you to tell it to not push emails from certain people. thanks for any information.

  15. Bill Mitchell says:

Ok, complete newb here but here goes.

Just bought an EVO and very impressed with it other than the utter lack of even rudimentary PIM capability. How a multi-gazillion dollar company like Google can force something as poorly integrated as calendar / contacts on confounds, but I digress.

Anyway, Touchdown looks like the closest thing to a PIM I can get but I honestly have no idea if I have access to an Exchange Server or not. I run Outlook 2007 on my desktop but get mail from your standard POP ISP.

So, is there some way I can set up exchange on my desktop and take advantage of this program or some other workaround?

    Greatly appreciated :)

  16. Toni says:

I need assistance on the settings for microsoft exchange online with the tourchdown on my droid. I am not sure what info to put in the setup and I am not connecting to my email. :(

  17. Vick says:

I am using HTC Derire 2.1

It crashes when i try to edit profile … and also read emails are still showing envelope even after i have marked them as read.. ??

    any ideas ?

  18. Simon Jones says:

I have just purchased a License Key but when I enter it when prompted the ‘Go!’ button doesn’t light up. Could you please help.

  19. Rick says:

Does your app allow the management of email folders including (especially) the ability to move emails from Inbox to another folder???

  20. Jeff says:

Can TouchDown be set up to open the next item in your mailbox after read/deleting and email?

  21. isdpcman says:

First, this is TONS better than the stock email app that came with my HTC EVO. It will display HTML email much like Outlook does. The “Home” screen gives a nice overview of tasks, appointments and email that has not been read. I was never able to get K9 to work (would not login to my Exchange server. Touchdown and the default HTC email app had no problems.)

There are two downsides to the app that are worth noting:
    1) You cannot set Touchdown as your default email app. This means you cannot send email from web links or any other app on your phone. You have to manually copy/paste addresses from other apps to send mail. This is a real pain if you’re active with your phone/email.

    2) Help for this application is sparse at best. There is NO help/example for any of the rules options or most of the other options. The rules are limited to very basic functions. I certainly hope they improve this capability as it makes the app extremely useful.

Other items worth noting: You MUST click SAVE (at the very bottom of the ADVANCED tab) or you lose any changes you made. [I found this VERY frustrating until I figured that out. It does not autosave like other Android apps]

Support is slow. While I did get answers to questions it took quite a while. Responses were of the “yes” or “No” type and didn’t offer any suggestions on how to accomplish the task being asked. It took 6 emails to find out I could not create a “clients” group on the phone or in my contacts list to get notifications about. When I asked about examples for the rules I got “We don’t have any.” as a response.

It’s a good email app. I purchased it and I use it daily. But at $20 (about 20x more expensive than most Android applications) I expect help, an online user guide with some depth about the unique features of the application and quick responses to questions.

All in all, i recommend the app for Exchange users on Android phones. I think this is much better than most apps I’ve used for corporate email (though I did like the WebOS mail viewer it did not support HTML, a big oversight in my opinion.) I just hope the developers add detailed help for the options and tweak the app to provide grouped email notification (so you don’t have to get notified for EVERY email…just the people you WANT to be notified about.)

  22. JG says:

I just installed Touch Down on my Droid 1 and everything seems to be working well but I use a 3rd party app that is used to scan bussiness cards into my droid and would sync up with my Out-look. Is there a way for the Cam-Card App to sync up with both Outlook and Touch-down??

  23. geir says:

bought samsung galaxy Si9000 with android 2.1
but do not get exchange to work
    - Anyone have solution?

    • isdpcman says:

It would be helpful if you indicated what you tried, what errors (if any) you’re getting and what version of Exchange you’re running. Does Exchange have push email enabled? (you can ask your admin or if anyone else is getting email to their mobile devices the push email IS enabled on Exchange.)

There are many reasons why Exchange email failures occur but most are user oriented.

      • geir says:

i have a HTC today and the exchange is ok on this. But i can not get my new samsung galaxy Si9000 with android 2.1 on exchange.
possibly wrong on “domain\username” not shore on the values here

  24. cwaters says:

I have an HTC Incredible with Froyo. Not rooted. I thought Froyo was supposed to add support for more than one Exchange ActiveSync account? I already sync with my company’s Exchange Server via ActiveSync. I was hoping to also begin sync’ing with my MSN mailbox using its new ActiveSync interface. But when I attempt to add a second Exchange ActiveSync account, it only lets me edit the existing account–not add a new one. Is this something that TouchDown could be used for?

    • g says:

the latest beta version of touchdown should let you connect to the account. cant post the link here, but search for touchdown google groups and within the group, click on the pages link on the right and look for a page about installing the beta.
      -g

  25. isdpcman says:

Now into Touchdown for over a month and have to go back to HTC EVO built in mail app. Touchdown has nice features like HTML email support and complete calendar support but there’s no way to make it the default email app and that means I cannot send anything out except from inside Touchdown. Cannot send photos, cannot email from internet websites, nothing! This app seriously restricts your capabilities with your wonderful Android based phone.

If the coders can get this integrated with the OS then it’s a winner. For now, keep looking of you want to use your phone and email for other things than JUST exchange.

  26. Glen says:

This is a great tool, much better than the EPIC loaded mail app, but the one thing I noticed is that there is no “Out of Office” setting this application. Is there a potential addition to this or am i missing something?

    • Chris says:

      Hey Glenn,

You can set your Out of office by opening touchdown, hit menu, then settings. Hit the advanced tab scroll all the way down and you will see Out Of Office.

      Hope this helps.

      -Chris

      • Glen says:

        Chris,

I’m not sure about this, but for some reason this the out of office option does not appear on my application. It may have something to do with the fact I am still running on 2003 Office on my PC.

  27. Yaco says:

I just got Touchdown on my Droid X and I am having trouble syncing it with Android. Is it possible for my Calendar widget to pull events off of my Touchdown calendar? I am also having problems with caller ID. For numbers who I have stored in my exchange database, but not on the actual phone, caller ID does not show their names when they call. Basically, touchdown is not syncing my calendars or contacts with the native Android system. Is this normal? I need this fixed!!!

  28. Keith says:

I have downloaded the full version app of TouchDown it has configured properly to my exchange. However no emails are showing up on the phone. I have tried to send a test email it shows up in my outlook but not on the phone.

How do I sync my Droid X with the outlook on my desktop?

  29. brugs says:

I have Samsung Fascinate from Verizon. I use POP3 for my email. I have my calendar and task on my desktop using outlook. I don’t have exchange server. I want to know if this software will work with POP3 and will it sync with my desktop for calendar and task.

    • Bruce says:

Did you ever get an answer to your question? I’m thinking about buying the same phone and use outlook on a single computer.

  30. Riki says:

I have to change my corporate password every 3 months…how is this done with The Exchange by Touchdown?
Also, how do I sync my calender on my Droid X with my computer?? I am not really computer savy!!!

  31. Gary Jillson says:

I have a Droid2, just purchased. I am able to sync with our exchange 2007 for mail, contacts and calendar using the corporate sync supplied with the phone. So far the sync is very timely. It does not sync tasks or memos.

How does the Touchdown app differ from the Corporate Sync?

  32. tim says:

will there be a version for the galaxy tab ?

  33. Riki says:

Is there a way to get confirmation that an email was read??

  34. A.A. says:

How do I know if this will work with my e-mail exchange

  35. steve v says:

I have the Droid, and never had a need for the app, as i could send and recieve emails with no problems.
recently my work flipped a switch somewhere in the exchange server which only allows access from BlackBerry units. So now my droid gets no emails on it. I reactivated my Blackberry Storm (but i hate this phone) and i get emails without problems. Will this program still work seeing how the exchange server is blocking non-blackberry units ?

  36. Poweruser says:

Actually, the most important gripe for me with all the ActiveSync clients is their inability to deal with multiple calendars. The iPhone does this quite well – it allows to select from the actual folder structure on the server. None of the Android ActiveSync clients I found allows this.

I could do without most of the features if that one thing was supported, to be honest.

  37. ken says:

I’m curious if there are security/privacy issues with using this service as my corporate email contains confidential information. Can you explain how your service works such that it will alleviate my concern? Thanks.

  38. Uwe says:

I’m on an Android G2 and have purchased license for Touchdown (Android 2.0). Everything works, except I’m unable to accept or decline meeting invites. in fact I can’t even seem to find the option to do so. PLease help.

  39. Tombo says:

    Hi,
I try to install Touchdown with our Exchange Server but it is not working.
I think the reason is the Certificate: how can I be sure that I installed correctly my digital Certificate?
    Thanks

    Checking Certificate…
    Checking ActiveSync with SSL…

  40. Datarada says:

I have the LG Optimus S – I have just download the 30day trail version of Touchdown. does anyone know how I can get the licsence in order to activate the application. and does the application stop working after 30 days or automatically charge your account for the full version?

  41. Roberto says:

How well does it work with Hotmail in ActiveSync mode? I set this up with the default HTC Mail app and it supports mail folders, contacts and calender. My issue is that with Hotmail’s quirky ActiveSync it doesn’t mark items as read or unread or even deleted in any folder except the Inbox. The marking works well in any folder when I’m using my company’s Exchange mail using the same HTC mail app. Hotmail won’t even let me see the mail in HTML, only text. Again, my company mail works fine with HTML.

  42. John Sacristan says:

Stephen, if you need a spell check you can use free online spell checker tool: http://www.spellchecker.net/spellcheck/
You have to copy and paste text but it is better than nothing.

  43. I have the app for my android but I think I accidentally messed up my login ID. I’ve tried several versions but I can’t get the downloads of my emails. I was changing my password at the time.

Any basic clues to what my login id should be in terms of the format?

  44. Garry Vajda says:

I have Win7Pro with MS Outlook 2010 on computer
Will Exchange By Touch Down Sync my emails, contacts, calendar ?
Just purchased Samsung Galaxy S2 suprised not standard as my old Nokia it was standard with a software sync program.
Is the purchase price of $19.99 a one off or annual fee?
