ESPN Goals is an app for fans of English Premier League football (soccer). It shows clips and highlights of recently played games and you can access upcoming fixture lists and results. If you watch ESPN in the U.K., they bang on about this app during every advert break as it provides a great way to see goals and catch up on lots of events. Is it any good though?
Price: Free
Tested on: HTC One X
Content Rating: Low Maturity
Pros & Cons:
Pros
- Access on your mobile to lots of action and goals, often within minutes!
- Clips of round ups and previews!
- Search for results and fixtures!
- Select your favourite team and receive video alerts!
Cons
- Ad-supported videos. This wouldn’t be a terrible thing if it wasn’t for the fact the video quality of the adverts far surpasses that of the games themselves.
- Woeful video quality.
Features:
ESPN Goals is a showcase of videos and information related to the English Premier League. The often near-live posting of content for streaming is pretty good and you can often see goals within a few minutes of them being scored. The UI in the app is relatively slick, and everything is simple to navigate and find your way around.
I generally like ESPN and their football coverage and thought their ScoreCentre app was very good. This only focuses on football, however, and specifically on videos. When opening the app you get a list of recently played games, along with the score and the opportunity to see video highlights within the app. Upon pressing the menu you can select to view fixtures and results, videos, the league table and see what is currently on the ESPN TV channel. You can additionally set your favourite team within the app and get video alerts when such clips are published. These menus are all pretty smooth and simple to navigate.
With the app being relatively straightforward, it’s easy to use and a great way of staying up-to-date with action. Sadly the thing that really lets it down is the video quality and, considering this is the whole point of the app, this is very disappointing. Before each clip you get to view a short advert which OK, it is a bit intrusive, but it’s a free app after all. The actual problem with this is that the quality of the advert is far better than that of the actual game clip! I think this sends a very spurious message to users of the app that ESPN are more interested in the quality of their sponsors output than that of their own, which is after all, the purpose of your downloading the app in the first place.
Surely it can’t be difficult to include the option of high-res video and not blocky pixelated images that feel like you’re streaming over patchy 3G? This is a significant let down for an otherwise pretty cool app. The bottom line I guess is that the images aren’t so bad as you cannot see what’s happening, just disappointingly low quality.

Usefulness:
ESPN Goals is good for checking out upcoming fixtures, seeing results and catching up to date with games in progress. You can also stream various packages; from individual game highlights, goals and round-ups.
Ease of Use:
The app is very easy to use and navigation is a breeze. The menu button provides access to various parts of the app and each is responsive and simple to understand.
Frequently Used:
This is something you might use a few times a week to stay up to date with various games as they happen. This is only for Premier League games, so during international breaks and on European game nights, there probably won’t be much action.
Interface:
The interface is resolute in the black and red you commonly associate with ESPN. Everything is very quick and responsive and it’s an app that is not difficult to find your way around.
