EPIX is a streaming movie service for watching full length movies, and extra content you normally would get on DVD’s; like trailers, interviews, and commentary. The app is free with a 14 day full trial, is it worth the monthly subscription spend? We’ll tell you that and more in our review!
Price: Free, Requires a Paid Subscription
Tested on: Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
Content Rating: Everyone
Pros & Cons:
Pros
- The movie library is decent, better than Amazon Prime.
- In addition to the movies, you can watch any extras, trailers, clips, etc. that might have been on the DVD.
Cons
- The quality of the movies wasn’t as crisp as I would have liked.
- While there are a lot of more current titles than some other services, there still seemed to be more horror and thriller movies than anything else, which, if you don’t like those types of movies, is a problem.
- I had a lot of force closing issues.
Features:
With the latest craze of streaming videos and movie services, Epix is another company trying to cash in. And this one has a few big names behind it, like Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate. So there are some big name films available to stream, like the new Star Trek film, or Rango, both fairly recent movies. I did find that the selection really leaned more toward horror films and action adventure, with some Sci-Fi thrown in for good measure. There are films in other categories, but not as many, and they feel more like the B or C list titles, instead of the blockbusters. It is worth noting, as well, that while the app is free, the service requires a subscription. You can get a 14 day free trial, though, so it is easy to try out and see if it fits into what you’re looking for before you commit to a monthly fee.
In addition to the movies themselves, each one also has many extras available for streaming, which can include interviews, trailers, commentary, etc. Basically the kinds of extra content you would find on a DVD, which is a nice option to have in a streaming service.
One complaint I had was that the quality of the movies wasn’t as crisp as I wanted them to be. I was expecting, frankly, HD quality, with crisp lines and colors. Instead, while it wasn’t unwatchable, every movie I tried had a bit of a softness to the picture. For some people, this could be a deal breaker.
I also should note that I did have some force close issues. Once I had a movie running, it seemed to work fine. But the app kept closing and requiring me to restart it while I was browsing through the catalog. It happened a few times, just enough that it was starting to get frustrating, but not enough to make me want to stop using the app altogether.

Usefulness:
This is a great app/service for movie buffs looking to have new content on the go. It does require an Internet connection, since it streams the movies on demand rather than download them, but it is a nice option. The catalog seems geared more toward men who like horror and action flicks, but if you fall into that category, you’ll find a lot here for you.
Ease of Use:
Other than the force closing I kept getting while trying to browse through all the options, it actually wasn’t too hard to use. There are a lot of ways to find content, from searching for a specific title to browsing through the entire catalog, with a few other options in between, making it easy to find what you’re in the mood to watch.
Frequently Used:
If you’re a movie buff, you’ll use this app often, working your way through the catalog of movies.
Interface:
The interface is very clean, if a bit dark with a lot of blank black areas. It was easy to figure out how to get to the content you were looking for, and once you have the account set up, you’re watching a movie in only a few minutes from browse to movie start.
