Epic Citadel is an app/game hybrid that allows you to explore a beautifully created medieval town. While nothing actually happens when you explore, it’s the kind of app which showcases the capabilities of your higher end Android device. The app then utilises these dazzling visuals to benchmark the frame rate of your device, so it’s useful too.
Price: Free
Tested on: Nexus 4
Content Rating: Everyone
Pros & Cons:
Pros
- Stunning graphics!
- Benchmark testing!
- Easy to use and explore the town!
Cons
- Really doesn’t do very much.
Features:
Epic Citadel is a great looking application which really shows off the HD gaming capabilities of your device. Using thumbsticks or arrow placement you can essentially explore a small medieval township with circus bazaar, sweeping cathedral, town centre and stunning views. There’s a beautifully rendered stream you can walk through. The whole experience is pretty breathtaking with incredibly detailed use of lighting and rich, natural colours.
Once you have explored the town you can use the app for frame rate benchmarking. The app does its thing and guides you around the town- from a sweeping tour perspective- and measures your frames per second. The app uses the Unreal Engine 3 to show off its abilities so your device is pushed very hard. On my Nexus 4 the scores tended to be around the 54-56 fps mark.
While the app is genuinely stunning to use, besides the benchmarking it doesn’t do very much. You can look around and explore, perform a benchmark or two but that’s about it. It’s a wonder to behold but it doesn’t perhaps warrant storing on your device for very long. It’s a nice ‘show off’ application and interesting if you want to test your fps, but little else. Because of its limited usage, I foresee lots of people downloading it, but then uninstalling after a short period.

Usefulness:
The app is useful if you want to know your device’s fps rate. It’s good for demonstrating the top end of your Android’s visual capability but this aside it’s just a pretty thing to look at rather than being of much use. It’s essentially a demo that looks amazing but doesn’t offer anything in the way of gameplay or purpose besides those mentioned.
Ease of Use:
The app is very easy to use- control your movement and view using thumbsticks or place navigational arrows on the path ahead and move automatically. You have a drop down menu which offers you the ability to benchmark or receives a tour where you can just sit back and marvel at the details and impressive graphics.
Frequently Used:
You can’t help but be moved by the graphics the app offers, but I think it’s the kind of app you download, use a few times, show off to friends before uninstalling after a short period or when you need more space on your device.
Interface:
The interface really constitutes the graphics demonstrated and they are as good if not better than any game you might have played on a mobile device. It would of course be great to see more games produced using this engine, currently the only one I can identify is Dark Meadow: The Pact.
