Dropcam Pro – one of the easiest Cloud Video Recording solutions
I implore you to read and watch our video review of Dropcam HD, the predecessor of this camera, as many of the features, the things I loved and griped about are exactly the same and do not want to regurgitate those. Instead I’ll focus on the new features with the Dropcam Pro.
What’s new with Dropcam Pro vs Dropcam HD
The Dropcam Pro camera offers full HD 1080p video recording to the cloud, whereas the previous was no slouch either offering HD video but the minimum 720p flavor. You can pinch and zoom into various parts of the video on mobile or web. With the apps and web interface is a new ‘Enhance’ feature to clarify areas in which you zoom- rather than showing a blurry or pixelated video. I’ve even found that you can zoom the Pro camera up to 64x after enhancing the picture. 😯 Unfortunately (on a phone) you can only see this new button when the device is in landscape and not in portrait mode.
Dropcam Pro – Comparing Digitial Enhance with 8x Zoom
You can now digital zoom twice as much; from 4x to 8x while pinching and zooming. The viewing angle is wider too; from 107 degrees to 130 degrees fish-eyed lens. I personally did not experience audio issues with either camera and could not gauge a significant difference in the audio improvements from the old to new. Though you can see the microphones in the back of the Pro are larger. With the previous camera I was sore that there were no granular configuration of alerts; this has now been added for configuring alerts during specific times on the web-only version but not the mobile app.
Pricing for each are the same- see the pricing matrix. However, the Pro version costs $199 per camera versus the HD version’s cost of $149 per camera. The feature bumps are just barely enough to justify the cost so I would approve there if you’re a first time buyer or adding to your existing solution. However, if you already have an HD camera it’s not a hurry and buy the latest and greatest camera situation. I would compare it as an upgrade to the iPhone 5S from 5, rather than upgrading from an iPhone 3S to the 4- a significant design and feature enhancement.
