The Weather Channel is helping Google’s mobile platform Android reach the masses by allowing users to scan a bar code from a television and download their weather app from the Android Market. An innovative approach to bridge the gap from traditional media and mobile consumers in real-time.

In this video, it highlights a typical weather broadcast then alerts viewers with a cool animated Motorola DROID phone and count down, then display a QR bar code that can be scanned with Bar Code Scanner Android app. QR bar codes are increasingly becoming popular in retail and advertising medium because they can contain more than just numbers; text, links, business card contact information, geo-location, calendar events, phone numbers, SMS, and more.

Initiatives like this are one of many innovative methods corporations will adopt Android to reach consumers directly, thus increasing the popularity of the fledgling platform. Projected to be the number two mobile operating system by 2013 according to a IDC forecast. Expect to see more adopt this tactic and give the it a try, scan and download the free app!
