Defender 3 – play this arcade style space tower defender game!
Apr 9, 2013 9:43 AM –
Defender 3 is a fun and eye-popping space shooter with smooth visuals, neat sound and engaging gameplay. A game suitable for children and adults alike it features two modes of gameplay, loads of weapons to upgrade to and swarms upon swarms of aliens to decimate. The game is free and operates a model where you can earn coins (for upgrades, etc.) by downloading other apps.
Tested on: Nexus 4
Pros & Cons:
- Smooth, bright, 2D graphics!
- Good sound!
- Loads of weapons to aspire to!
- Upgrading to decent weapons is a very gradual process.
Defender 3 (relax, I can’t find any evidence of Defender 1 or 2 either) is a bustling space-shooter-cum-tower-defense game that offers exciting gameplay, a huge arsenal of weaponry and two modes of play. Your job essentially is to defend the planet from aliens (although note that you’re actually an alien yourself). These aliens come at you through 360 degrees of arcade-style battle ground, with you sat plum in the center. You shoot by touching the screen where you want the turret to aim.
There is a heady slew of additional weapons and you do get the initial chance to try some of these out in the virtual tutorial at the beginning of the game. It’s a little jarring to then start with such a weak-ass pea-shooter of a laser when you start the game for real, but there is potential to build up coins and weapons as you progress.
As far as I could see, there are no in-app purchases which you usually expect to see in free games of this nature. Instead the developers have followed the model that allows you to earn more coins by downloading and installing other games. While this obviously takes you well away from Defender 3, it at least feels far less mercenary than mandatory in-app purchases.
The game is complimented by great sound and neat graphics. While neither are mind-blowing, they each work very well with the arcade-shooter theme of the game. Early stages feel quite slow but this soon picks up as you progress, creating frenetically exciting gameplay and ‘by-the-skin-of-your-teeth’ level completion.

You’ll most certainly find this fun and enjoyable if you have previously played space shooting games; anything from Space Invaders and Asteroid to Raiden and R-Type. Defender 3 is fun, a little quirky and cartoonish, but altogether a great game to play.
The game is addictive, most definitely so if you enjoy these kind of games. The difficulty level soon rises and the enemies get closer and closer. There are some pretty devastating weapons to unleash too which makes the game all-the-more playable.
The graphics are relatively simple without being noticeable ‘retro’. The are bright, well designed, responsive and often quite detailed.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
I thought the sound was excellent for this kind of game. Just the right level of authentic sound effects and immersive music.
