Cricket Wireless just launched its first Android based smartphone called Sanyo Zio by Kyocera with a $55 unlimited voice and data plan.

The entry level Android phone is sleek and stylish design. Features Android 1.6 OS, 600MHz processor, 512MB of embedded memory, MicroSD slot supporting 32GB cards, stereo Bluetooth, 3.5” WVGA touch-screen, WiFi capability, 3G Real Web Browsing, 3.2 megapixel camera/camcorder, MP3 player/microSD slot, virtual QWERTY keyboard,  and of course access to thousands of Android Apps (find best Android apps on AndroidTapp.com)!

When I saw the phone back in February at CTIA 2010 in Vegas, my own personal opinion of the phone was, “beautiful display but poor touchscreen response and older version of Android software” see in the video below. It would be interesting to see how the response issues were corrected now that the phone has officially launched.

I plan on picking one of these up. The service is downright cheap compared to the big providers who like to force you into contracts @ $90 / mo with $200+ termination fees. I ditched AT&T after being with them for 7 years. 2 of which I paid for and owned an iPhone. Not only did I subsidize R&D for Apple’s later gen’s by paying $499 for the first gen, I also took it up the rear from AT&T every month. Well, I freed myself from their chains and have been enjoying basic but still unlimited talk and text with Cricket since 2009. Now I’m ready for some more communication features like checking email again on the go, maps, info at my fingertips, facebook, etc. So I’m gonna get the Zio and revel in doing everything I need to do at almost half the cost per month of my old iPhone. Plus, it was fun owning an iPhone when they were new and rare. Now everyone has one and they’re no longer the “it” item they were 3 years ago. Oh yeah, and I hear they don’t make phone calls anymore. Hilarious. Keep shelling out the money suckers!
