Features:
CNBC Real-Time for Android is a real time financial news application for the Android platform. CNBC Real Time allows you to get up-to-the-minute reports from CNBC financial news, the stock market, and CNBC video reporting. CNBC also allows you to view real time changes in your own stocks portfolio through the “My Stocks” option. It is also one of the original Google TV applications.
First, CNBC provides real time updates on the stock market. Under the “Markets” heading you are able to see up to the minute changes in the US, European, and Asian indexes. You are also able to search for a specific stock under the search real time quotes option. Throughout the time you are using the application you will also see a live stock ticker at the bottom of the screen which displays recent changes in various companies on the stock market.
Under the “My Stocks” heading you are able to input a list of the stocks you wish to follow. This area allows you to see day ranges, last traded value, and also where the stocks would compare against yesterdays numbers. This area of the application also shows a list of recent news items related to the companies that you follow under the “My Stocks” section. Unfortunately, this area of the application does not allow you to input your portfolio values in order to see real time changes in your personal portfolio’s value. Instead it serves as a way to track daily changes in the market as well as to see news articles related to your portfolio.
The CNBC News portion of the application is exclusively dedicated to written financial news articles. Under this heading you will find breaking news related to the various international financial markets. The application utilizes Honeycomb’s unique API’s to produce a two paned approach to the financial news. New articles are displayed on a small scroll bar on the left hand side of the screen, the contents of a selected article are displayed in the large open portion of the screen on the right hand side.
While using the application I noticed hourly updates from CNBC. The articles had excellent content and many were focused on the current financial debate in Washington. Making this application an excellent way to become more informed on our country’s financial situation and our government’s plan to fix it. This portion of the application was also extremely easy to read, however, their is no option to change font size; so those with limited vision may require reading glasses.
Finally, under the “Videos” heading you will find updated broadcasts of recent financial news. This area of the application also utilizes the ability of Honeycomb to handle the two panel design. So it displays article headings on one side and video content on the other. Video quality and controls were excellent under this portion of the application, but it was not updated nearly as much as the news portion of the application. Instead I found a 10 hour gap between recent videos, so expect a delay before breaking video news hits the CNBC Application.

Usefulness:
CNBC Real Time is an excellent application for staying up to date in real time with the financial sector. It has current updates for the stock market as well as the ability to monitor up-to-the-minute changes in your own stock portfolio. It also allows you to see written hourly articles on the financial market and will suggest articles based on the companies in your portfolio.
Unfortunately, the “My Stocks” portion of the application does not allow you to input stock quantity in order to calculate the value of your portfolio; so this application cannot be a one stop shop for all of your portfolio’s needs. Also the video updates are in limited quantity and infrequent making it more likely that you are catching up on yesterday’s news.
Ease of Use:
CNBC Real Time is extremely easy to use. The application is designed to allow you to move from screen to screen easily and fluidly. I especially enjoyed the dual pane design of both the video and news section which allowed you to easily switch between articles or videos without having to exit and reenter various portions of the application.
Frequently Used:
I personally am not heavily invested in the stock market and so only glance at this application from time to time. However, given our nation’s current financial difficulties I have begun to use this application to keep me better informed of what is going on in both Washington and Wall Street.
I would recommend this application as a daily flier to anyone who invests in the stock market or is interested in doing so. This is an excellent complement to a portfolio manager and will allow you to track stock changes and financial news in real time; which is essential for a trader in today’s economy.
Interface:
The interface for CNBC Real time was clean cut and extremely easy to use. I loved the flow of the application and felt that it put all of the important information easily at my fingertips. This application has a well designed interface (including large screen displays for both tablets or televisions) that many other financial applications could take a lesson from.
