Civilization War- build an epic empire in this massive online multi-player game Install

Civilization War is a social multi-player game for your mobile device. I think a short cut to explaining what the game is, would be to simply mention Zynga’s Mafia Wars, only this has more of a Risk feel to it. Engrossing and fun, you need to complete missions, build your armies, buildings and assets, progress your Civilization’s development and grow your society into the biggest and best!

Price: Free, with optional in-game purchases

Tested on: HTC One X

Pros & Cons:

Pros

  • Immersive gameplay!
  • Already features a large online community!
  • High threshold for free playing!
  • Lots of activities and things to pursue and build!
  • Lots of countries to initially choose from!

Cons

  • Perhaps too much relies on Hero points which you have to purchase.
  • Sound is a little repetitive and sounds a little ‘bottled’.

Features:

Civilization War is essentially one epic quest to develop your nation into the best it can be. From mastering the likes of fishing and hunting to growing your armies, embracing scientific achievements and making progress- the game is all about strategy and mission completion. It’s a big online multi-player too, so expect to be attacked by people wanting your resources! You, in turn, can attack others, spy on them and accept payments to complete jobs from a hit list. All-in-all, if you have played Mafia Wars on Facebook (or elsewhere) even other Android apps like World War, this is much of the same fare, albeit blended somewhat with games like Risk and Civilization.

To start with things are simple as are your people. You need to learn how to hunt, fish and farm and each takes energy. Once you achieve a certain number of points you jump a level and regain all your energy points. This means you can skip a few early levels in the first sitting. I’ve spoken before about freemium games and how there is a ‘threshold’ as to how much you can play before you have to pay to progress. With Civilization War it’s pretty good; you can play for a good 30 minutes or more initially as you explore and build your new Civilization. Inevitably there are two kinds of currency in the game, plus energy. Coins will let you buy most things, but the real clout comes with Hero points which you can only buy. Owning such points allows you to buy favours and progress faster.

Civilization Wars is a text-based game, so is basically a routine of clicking buttons and strategically growing your world via creating buildings, expanding armies, buying farms, erecting walls for defense, mastering skills and unlocking science. You can invade uncivilized tribes at the beginning too and loot money. I like the way the game plays through periods of Civilization. You begin with ‘Ancient’ and, once your people get their heads around basic hunter/gatherer goals you progress ‘Classic’ Civilization. This continues through Medieval, Renaissance, Industrial, Modern and Future.

At the heart of the game is a busy social aspect in which you can form alliances, rob and pillage others and visit online forums (although these are not in English). There is an advantage to having alliances and it’s a simple case of sharing your player code to add friends. Overall the game is remarkably engrossing and immersive, certainly one of the more addictive games available in the Google Play Store. If you’ve played games like this before, perhaps most notably the likes of Mafia Wars, this will suit you very well.

Fun Factor:

For the duration of the time you can play (before you run out of energy), the game is lots of fun and very engaging. It’s a casual game that you have to check into on a regular basis to make the most of your refreshed energy level so requires a fair amount of regular play commitment to progress at a steady pace. The variety in gameplay is good too, you’re not just completing missions all the time. Additionally there are lots of online players to form alliances with and chat to.

Addictive:

Now, personally I don’t find these games particularly addictive- but there’s no denying their popularity and addictiveness in wider circles. Such games are very captivating and the very top grossing games in the Google Play Store are compulsive freemium games like this. Not my cup of tea, but millions of users love this genre.

Graphics:

The graphics are purely text base with a few still images dotted throughout, so no action but a relatively rich environment to play in. Not the best we’ve seen by a long shot but relatively sound. One such image is that of Ghandi- who endorsed non-violence- which is pretty unfathomable for a game all about war, battles and domination.

Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:

The sound is a mixture of epic music and strange sound effects. The music is fine, but when the battle cries and cheers sound like they are underwater. This is simply the sound quality not quite being up to scratch but is more amusing than annoying. All this is fine to start with but after extended play I did find myself muting the sound altogether.

Should you Download Civilization War? Civilization War wins big with addictiveness and engagement. Fans of the freemium text base genre will love this and should look to download it as soon as possible. The game features a big online community and there is always lots to do in-game. Such games are often either loved or hated, so obviously steer clear if this isn’t your thing. For fans though, Civilization War brings a new perspective and is all-conquering fun throughout.

    Civilization war awesome?
Play to level 40 and see how bad the game is…
Players without any heroes robs you blind even when you had bought heroes a lot…and price of Hero-points, how greedy can be !
1 Hero costs 5$ !!!!!! And 1 Hero doesnt give you any advantage.
Ill give 1 star or 1p of 10 to this game, great idea, nice layout but WHY Hero-points costs so much ?? Another game what favors only hackers.
