SMS all the time? Then chompSMS is for you: It’s got a great user interface, chat style SMS bubbles, a Touchscreen keyboard and many other great features!
It’s a free app and SMS’s are sent normally via your carrier; or there’s the option if you pay high SMS rates (e.g. to overseas) to send cheaper SMS’s
chompSMS is a cool alternative app for the native Android SMS messaging app. The coolest feature is the iPhone-like on-screen virtual keyboard, so you have the option to use it or slide open the phsyical QWERTY keyboard on your G1. One thing chompSMS can’t do is send MMS picture messages.
(you have to use the default Messaging app to send or receive MMS picture messages).
Besides that, you can do all the other tasks as the default Messaging app: select ringtones (if you have Rings Extended installed, you can choose MP3 Ringtones, even those created with Ringdroid), set Notification vibration (Update: chompSMS notification does NOT alert you 100% of the time in the notification bar and light… you often have to open the app to notice you’ve received new SMS texts), font sizes, even Touchscreen Click Sound and Touchscreen Vibrate while tying.
One concern we have with chompSMS is when the “Cupcake” update goes out in January 09, which includes an onscreen keyboard… will the app lose some cool points?
The on-screen virtual keyboard makes this app very useful. Also chompSMS’s service makes it advantageous for folks getting taxed for high text plans or overseas usage.
The on-screen keyboard does take some getting used to as you can easily tapp the wrong letter. Gripe Alert: Android OS needs Predictive Text or AI text learning habits as iPhone does to prevent mistyped words.
Frequency of use depends on the user. We’ve heard of many people replacing the default Messaging app completely or alternating between apps.
The user interface is Awesome! Looks just like the iPhone text SMS interface with bubble style chat!!

This app is awesome. I wish the onscreen keyboard had auto correct or some kind of predictive text, but it’s all good.
I also like this app, but wish it was it bit more responsive @ times.
This is a great application and the touch keyboard is very sensitive which is really good. Some time the letter m is kinda hard to hit, don’t know why. The thing that would be great is to flip the screen when rotating so it can make the keyboard bigger
Touchscreen keyboard,
I love the g1 hope i win one!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love this app because i am a texter. Its easier to get me via Text or Aim. Not crazy about the on screen keyboard. I bought the G1 because it was Different from the iPhone, i never use the touch screen, its useless and tainted with a faint apple flavor.
I recently had chompSMS but after like a few days the app refused to send anymore messages and I had to go back to my default… is there something that I can do so that it becomes my primary way to send texts but I don’t have to keep installing and uninstalling it?
I REALLY LIKE THE APP, JUST CUSTOMIZED IT AND EVERYTHING, BUT IS THERE AWAY TO DELETE THE DEFAULT NOTIFICATION? I AM TIRED OF BOTH OF THEM COMING UP…
Erica , in regards to your question posted above about chomps sms., if you hard touch messaging it will ask you which message service you want to use, if you check cmomps, it will completly use chomps as ur primary and you will no longer get both notifications , hope this helps !
