Google’s Android operating system is awesome, yet it’s plagued by Fragmentation of the various versions of the OS in the market. Often new consumers are confused by the fact they cannot download apps their friends may have or even some apps reviewed on AndroidTapp.com and wonder why. Many times it boils down to the Android version your phone has.
Think of it as; if you have Android 1.5 (if compared to Windows 2000) and the app requires Android 2.0+ (if compared to Windows Vista)… bottom line it’s just not happening. However we have created a chart of various Android phones by OS versions of phones released by Q1 2010 to help understand and ease these fragmentation frustrations. We’ll update as more phones hit the market.
Key Highlights for the Chart (Updated):
- Of 20 Android phones in the market globally HTC produced 55%, Motorola 25%, Samsung 15%, and Sony Ericsson 5%
- Only 30% of Android phones are on the latest 2.1 software, 30% with 1.6, and the majority 40% on 1.5
- All Verizon phones in the market are running the latest Android OS
- Motorola and Samsung phones trail the crowd for updated phones
