Chart: What Android Version is my Phone?

Google’s Android operating system is awesome, yet it’s plagued by Fragmentation of the various versions of the OS in the market. Often new consumers are confused by the fact they cannot download apps their friends may have or even some apps reviewed on AndroidTapp.com and wonder why. Many times it boils down to the Android version your phone has.

Think of it as; if you have Android 1.5 (if compared to Windows 2000) and the app requires Android 2.0+ (if compared to Windows Vista)… bottom line it’s just not happening. However we have created a chart of various Android phones by OS versions of phones released by Q1 2010 to help understand and ease these fragmentation frustrations. We’ll update as more phones hit the market.

Key Highlights for the Chart (Updated):

  • Of 20 Android phones in the market globally HTC produced 55%, Motorola 25%, Samsung 15%, and Sony Ericsson 5%
  • Only 30% of Android phones are on the latest 2.1 software, 30% with 1.6, and the majority 40% on 1.5
  • All Verizon phones in the market are running the latest Android OS
  • Motorola and Samsung phones trail the crowd for updated phones

You know, being open and all, manufacturers should go to bigger extents in customising Android. So far only HTC’s effort looks both professional and good. Sony’s effort with Xperia is great in terms of media but otherwise ordinary. Motorola’s customisation is not really to my liking.

Hope there’ll be more competition against HTC. Actually, not more. But better competition.

My issue with searching for apps on the Droid comes when you try & search from a web browser rather than a mobile device. Android for example has a very limited approach through web browsers(hate that). I have come to the conclusion that if I want to search apps on my laptop, I should use other marketplaces. I found the Facebook, AIM, & more on a site called RawApps

Samsung Moment update came out last night, still has yet to be confirmed by Sprint. As more saturation of the Moment gets 2.1 we’ll bump it up. A lot of Moment owners have no clue an update is available… only the savvy.

Why is the HTC Magic listed when it’s just the product codename for mytouch3g?

You know, you could also look a little bit outside the US…
For instance, I have a Vodafone-branded Magic, running 1.6. And that was an OTA upgrade.

What I’d really like to see is a full timeline of when each of the major Android phones received updates for each iteration of Android.
